And yes, 8-4 is not great by any team's standards that should have a Heisman candidate on their roster. And Pac-10 is an offensive league. It is sort of like VMI scoring in hoops ... you take it with a grain of salt. And yes, I watched plenty of Pac-10 & MWC football being in this time zone.
That puts him on level ground with Colt in the Big 12, with it's incredible pass defense that lead to low scoring 50-49 games.

And Standford is good enough of a team and Toby is excellent enough as a player to merit his Heisman candidacy, and his hopeful victory.

Not arguing that the Big XII was down in general and defensively in particular. You will notice I didn't hype Colt even though of the primary offensive candidates I like his case the best.

Speaking of Case, he'll be a frontrunner next year as a senior. Most of you only saw the C-USA game which was easily his poorest of the season. But the kid is top shelf stuck in a mediocre to poor league.

return man from the ACC?? Wow Sly you have sunk to new levels. though i agree with your assessment of tebow and i really like Colt, but in his biggest games against the best competition he did not deliver and unfortunately the way the heisman voting goes that will be his downfall.

That took way longer than I expected for somebody to respond to that comment.

But you have to admit that outside of returns, Spiller wouldn't even be in the discussion.

As for Colt, he did not play well int he last game voters saw. There is no getting past that point. Ingram wouldn't have been in the hunt still if that Texan at QB for Bama hadn't pulled off that incredible comeback in the Iron Bowl when Ingram couldn't do anything.

Hopefully enough intelligent voters will go with Suh if for no other reason than the rest of the candidates really haven't had Heisman years.

CJ Spiller just a return man?

201 rushes 1145 yards 5.7 average 11 TDs
33 receptions 445 yards 13.5 average 4 TDs
21 kick returns 708 yards 33.7 average 4 TDs
8 punt returns 210 yards 26.3 average 1 TD
264 touches 2508 all purpose yards 9.50 average 20 TDs
10 plays of 50+ yards, 8 of which were TDs
Career ACC leader in all purpose yards by 1588 yards

233 yards rushing and 4 TDs in the ACC Title game.

Last time I checked return TD's are a huge part of football and are game-changing plays. Probably one of the most athletic plays you can make in football is to return a kick for a touchdown. He did it 5 times this year.

Charles Woodsen would not have won his Heisman if it weren't for his play in the return game, and Desmond Howard for that matter.

Which is why I referred to him as a return man and why I including return TDs in the equations listed earlier in the thread. Spiller's return numbers still don't even give him the production of Gerhart.

The only reason why Spillar didn't get as many yards or TD's per game is because he had huge returns throughout the game, not one, but several.... After a 90 yrd TD return, he sits on the sidelines catching his breath. This happened a lot. Plus all the times he didn't score TD's. The guy is a stud.
I really like McCoy, sorry Sly, but he really did shoot himself in the foot in the XII game.
A lot of people said Tebow lost the Heisman because of his performance in the SEC title game, but he didn't play all that bad. 1 Td 1 Int isn't the best, but 20-35 for 247 yrds. Not bad in a title game.
Sorry all Bama fans, but I just can't stand Ingram, so there is my feelings about that one.

Take away his rushing and receiving yards and TDs and he's no longer in the discussion too. Take away Colt McCoy's passing TDs he's no longer in the discussion. Take away Gerhart's rushing TD's he's no longer in the discussion. Take away Ingram's rushing TD's he's no longer in the discussion.

What's your point?

I think it is worth pointing out (if it hasn't been done yet) that Spiller put up the numbers he put up this year playing hurt pretty much the whole year. I know players play hurt all of the time, but they don't make the plays he made while hurt. Also, I don't remember him having many "stat padding" games (though I could be wrong about that). I don't think he played much in the CCU game (and I think he could have put up pretty big numbers in that game).

Take away Clemson's losses and any negative plays Spiller made and he'd be the favorite to win it (sorry, thought I'd try to get in the "take away..." talk).

Um.... ACC championship game....????? Also, Miami (Fl) - 1 TD - 185 yards rushing + receiving(not including return yards), not bad at all. Against FSU - 2 TD's - 212 yards 165 of it in rushing (again, not including return yards). These are pretty solid games. *** Not including return yards/Td's either***
He showed just how good he was during the ACC championship game.

Colt is not even the best QB in the state of Texas...he's third behind Keenum and Jerrod Johnson

:rofl

Colt did not have anywhere near the season this year that he did as a junior. That's why I haven't been stumping for him to win this award. Midway through the season Shipley was the one I was promoting until injuries slowed him down. He's had a turf toe for the past 5-6 games and his numbers started dropping.

:dontgetit Uh, either you misunderstood me or I'm misunderstanding you. Saying he didn't have many (or any) "stat padding" games doesn't mean he didn't put up big numbers in any games. Stat padding would be him staying in a game to put up numbers for the sake of having big numbers (padding his stats). The games you just talked about are games when Clemson needed him in the game. And for the record, I see no reason to not include return yards and TD's off of returns (since this is part of the game). And didn't Spiller also pass for a TD this year? I don't think I've seen that listed here yet.

As a Nebraska fan I was pulling for Suh, I have seen most of there games this year and I have never seen a defensive player dominate so many games in one season.

Closest Heisman vote ever...I was driving along and they were talking about it on ESPN and the guy they were interviewing said that if Colt McCoy had had a better game against Nebraska, he probably would have been the winner easily

So the defensive player who stops/dominates the 'to be' heisman winner and causes him to not get it, doesn't....? I'm confused. Suh should have won.

Eh I don't know about that (BSU). But you are correct, it would never have happened. Doesn't mean I won't stand up for the guy, not that that matters either.....

Agreed he wasn't the best football player... You can make the argument he deserved it though...especially after that SEC championship game. If I had a vote I would not have voted for him...but, the argument can be made.

As for the emotion -- awww come on, like Tebow it was very genuine in my opinion. The Kid has been through a lot with his Dad and obviously it meant a lot to him... He was gracious and extremely humble in his speech. Seems like a good kid and can't say anything negative about him or the emotion he showed. Its amazing how all 5 of those guys seemed like genuinely great people -- not just good football players. Did anyone else think that Archie Griffin (who was right over his left shoulder for the speech) was about to run up and give him a hug, at about 5 different times? haha...good stuff. Not who I wanted to win...but still a good night I think, and happy for the guy to say the least.

I think it funny that Ingram won the Heisman when he didn't even win the Doak Walker award. The award supposedly given to the best RB in the nation lol

Haha! You noticed that too! I could have sworn Griffin was going to give the speech for him or something. My comment on emotion is more toward those who always make fun of Tebow for crying, when he doesn't really cry, he just gets choked up. It was not meant as an attack on Ingram at all for showing emotion, and I'm sure he has been through more than any of us can imagine. I'm sure he's a great guy and it showed. But as for the award in itself, +11111 on NG33's comment. The guy didn't even win the best RB award, so how can he win the Heisman when there was another RB in the mix....? I know the voting was crazy close, but cmon...

O I know you can, I just think it's funny that the best player in the nation (an RB) didn't even win the Doak Walker award.
