Too bad that guy is not a university president or the conference commissioner. I think it's been said over and over that there are a lot of CAA member presidents that are not down with us.

With the new stadium and the amount of money liberty invest in football. I really think the CAA members might have a change of heart. You also have to look at travel cost. Were located near all the CAA south schools. The economy crashing isn't making it easy for athletic programs. I would not be surprise if URI is next to drop.

Every time a poor sister CAA school drops football the closer we come to the possibility of the league stepping up together. Yeah, there is a long way to go. But if URI goes down and the northern schools bolt then the whole CAA football situation becomes crazy.

... except that you have nothing but affiliate members up north. With the playoffs expanded next year the value of being in the CAA will be slightly lessened.

I don't think anybody has any idea what will happen in the next two years as far as the conference landscape is concerned. But I don't think a status quo by the CAA as it stands today is likely. the climate is changing and it feels much like it did a decade or so ago when the last craziness went down.

The other factor there is that Doc is in heaven, and those who opposed us mainly because of their hatred for him don't necessarily feel as strongly about JJ and Jonathon.

Commissioner Yeager of the CAA said in a phone conference today that he was notified on Monday that the football program would be the topic in yesterday’s Hofstra board meeting.

He added, “In 2010, the CAA will consist of one division, with 10 teams. Each team will play 8 CAA opponents, plus their 3 non-conference games". More information to follow soon.

I disagree with UMass, Delaware and Villanova, I think Delaware would stay with a CAA South spin-off. UMass and Villanova have their eyes on the big prize, a Big East football/basketball rebalance that would send UMass/VU up to 1-A in the Big East. UDel, ODU, and JMU are all in the same boat, hoping to make it to 1-A jointly. It would be stupid and down right irresponsible not to consider Liberty since your school and program are looking to upgrade to 1-A as well. Charlotte is starting a program and would be a good fit, and Georgia State doesn't want to stay in 1-AA for long once their program starts. Although Towson isn't very good, they would be jumping as well since they have some money, a stadium that can be expanded, and an ambitious AD/pres. App State would be in as well i would think. If we could pull away a team like Marshall, ECU, or an East Tennessee State from CUSA/Sun Belt I think that would help finish out the conference and get it to 9 or 10 members. W&M and UR are stuck with each other, likely moving to an A-10 or Patriot type league that has their level of academics. VCU/GMU are all sport members as well, maybe one day they start football. I think this would be a solid and tight nit conference that already has several established rivalries. A lot of schools are within 4 hours of each other so conference-wide travel costs would be down with the exception of Ga State.

Umass wants nothing to do with FBS football. Even when they saw Uconn make the move and almost instantly be successful and make a bowl game they said that there was no way they could do that. I doubt things have gotten better since then.

Our best bet out of the 3 questions marks would be Marshall, but I'd prefer East Carolina for the 9th team. If we're trying to get to 12 for all other sports then GMU, VCU and ETSU would work.

whoops! when i said east tennessee state i meant Middle Tennessee State, currently in the Sun Belt. In that case they may be a little too far away from the conference to make it worth while. Georgia Southern would be a good option as well.

There is a meeting scheduled with the CAA commissioner and representatives from the four remaining CAA teams in the northern division (UNH, Maine, Rhode Island, and UMass) scheduled for December 21st. There should be more clarity in the weeks following this meeting. The question is, did the CAA schedule the meeting, did the 4 northern teams schedule it or was it a joint effort?

I can imagine that the four schools are going to voice frustration, and that the CAA commissioner will offer some sort of concession... And then say that they plan on extending membership offers to Fordham (who won't be able to compete for the Patriot League championship anymore) and another school up north (say, Stony Brook).

And then the CAA will be up to 14 teams.
