Nah---just a function of having a lot of young guys. We lost plenty of games like this when Marshall was here and we were young. We went two years without a BSC championship while he was here too when we were young and injured. We were beating big boys 2 years ago but after Gaynor, Jenkins, and McCoullough left, it was a turnover of about 8-10 quality guys in two years. Now we have all frosh and sophs and the seniors we have are walk-ons, juco's and guys getting back from injury. Plus losing DeAndre hurt---he would have been a great senior pg last year.

The name brand, program, and talent is there, just going through a transition with young guys.

If we are using this game as a barometer then WU will win the league and we are a good bit better than last year, just by the fact we are hitting open jumpers.

Why did I expect any less? While UNCA has been unable to hit open jumpers so far this year (which is another matter) -- i dare venture that hitting an OPEN JUMPER is a fairly fundamental element to basketball... And as bad as the Big South has been so far -- it is not H.S -- and the good old boys from Rock Hill might need to do a tad more than that.

I guess the genius who thought we could predict the order of the Big South from tonight's game doesn't get a facetious statement, but I should have figured.

Anyways Oldflame looks like you are right, not playing well the second half, although we are still playing against the Clemson starters---you guys didn't make it nearly this far.

Yes Cider we used computers... Actually there were a couple people I ran into that would turn their papers in (shorter ones) hand written. One guy while I was at UNCA, the others were elsewhere...kinda different but, whatever your more comfortable with I guess.

I don't know why i keep doing this to myself (and everyone at FlameFans)... I know it must be tough for you Winthrop MBA folks to connect the dots -- but I obviously went back to school after UNCA (notice i referenced school outside of UNCA), and in fact there are more English undergrad majors with JD's than any other degree. And while not as many MBAs there are still a heck of a lot of English majors with MBAs, and various other Graduate degrees. Mostly because we learn to write coherently and think critically -- two things that unfortunately are becoming more rare in today's world. Now those creative writing peeps are a different story

But in reality everything I do now I probably could have done after my undergrad education (i know, 'you can serve me coffee without an undergrad degree!' hilarious, very original). Now can we please get back to making fun of Winthrop basketball?? Or even perhaps that UNCA just got smoked by the worst team in the SEC? Not a good couple weeks for Big South basketball.

Yeah -- and I'm not saying that UNCA is going to live up to the preseason ranking and is the class of the conference, because we have looked simply awful... But considering the other performances around the conference I just don't think anyone is very good at all. Just look at the conference as a whole. Duke basically scored 60 on Winthrop in the first half, Tennessee obviously took UNCA apart -- and UNCA kept that game close a year ago with the two teams rosters being basically the same.

And the claim that somehow Winthrop is in another class is just not empirically viable. The stats don't bear it out... 2003-2007 yes -- they outclassed the league, but not since then. And when your that much better than everyone in your conference it doesn't take 3 years to 'reload.'

And the conference should be better too -- that's what I don't get... its frustrating.

As for the Winthrop comments, it's amazing how everyone wants to leave out/forget/deny 2008 when we won the conference as well. So we've only gone one season without a title. Before the 2004-2008 run, we had two seasons without a title, after some similar turnover, albeit not nearly as severe as losing 8-10 upperclassmen in two seasons. I realize everyone wants us to drop, but it isn't going to happen long term. We've played exactly one season and 3 games where we haven't been particularly great---but in our worst season in 11 years we finished .500 in conference. Every other conference school can only dream their worst seasons being that good, or the best being as good as ours.

Unless you think we're UNC and bringing in all-americans every year (and there are Winthrop fans who think that), when you lose 8-10 guys it is going to take at least a season, maybe two, to reload.

Winning it every year isn't possible for anyone. However, Winthrop is and will continue to be head and shoulders over the rest of the league when talking in terms of overall long term program. They simply have the name brand no one else can compete with.
