It was last year. FU fumbled on the 2 yard line. App tore the goal posts down and then carried them around campus and dove into some pond with them, in December.

i think if we win, we should just read our bibles, thats the only celebration that is in accordance with the liberty way after all. ( please, sense sarcasm)

I was at the UNC game and was proud to help assist in bringing the goal posts down....What a game that was, I wonder if Hurricane Fan remembers that game!!!

While it's been humorous to read some of the posts on this one, I must say that I don't see anyone on our home schedule this year worth the price of a goalpost at Williams Stadium. Not even William and Mary. Sure they beat us 56-0 last year, buit who didn't stomp us a year ago? If anything the goalposts should only come down Thursday because it will be the program's first "W" in almost exactly one year. But I must agree with Slyfox from earlier, destroying University Property is not only dangerous, but stupid. Nobody can complain about us not having good parking lots or lacking in some other area if the school is having to take that money and instead use it to fund a new goalpost because the kids ripped it down after defeating the almighty Tribe.

In any case there are exceptions however. If I am fortunate enough to be at a game one day as an alumni when this thing is I-A, if we beat a top 5 ranked team I will more than gladly join in the ruckas!!!

I was thinking that too. While I don't agree with you, you're a pretty man so it's ok.

Let's be real here. The goalposts shouldn't come down unless there is a big-time win...I mean BIG time. I-AA opponents should not be included in this category. I would be in favor of rushing the field after an upset win over Wake and bringing THEIR goalposts back to Lynchburg. Bet we'd make Sportscenter for that.

[Remember a few years back when Wisconsin beat Minnesota in the Metrodome and the Badger fans carried the pieces of the posts up the stairs and out the doors of the dome? How the UM students let that happen, I will never know.]

Ok, so if a Big South team beats the defending national champions at home, that isn't cause to tear em down?

Yes, A win vs a good 1A program would be monumental enough to consider taking down the goalpost. W & M would not fall in that catagory.

The chances of us beating a decent I-A football team are about the same as Jerry being mistaken for being skinny. It isn't going to happen.

You mean to tell me that if we were to play JMU at home this year and beat them, that wouldn't be worth tearing the goal posts down? All of you alumni who claim it was a huge rivalry are the ones I'm talking to.

There's no chance in Hell we'd ever play Texas, much less come within 70 points of them. Ever. I have a better chance of turning Baptist than that happening. We haven't beaten a Division I opponent in almost two years and we're claiming that a win over a I-AA team doesn't mean anything. Woo boy, you guys never let me down.

I'm not saying it doesn't mean anything...I'm saying that something like tearing down the goalposts should be saved for something incredible...something that everyone would agree was the defining moment of the program.

It's kind of like rushing the court in basketball. You don't want to make a habit of it or it will become a, well, habit. Example: In 1999 or 200 (someone help me out here), we beat Navy on a buzzer beater in the Vines center in front of 3,000 or so fans. A couple hundred people rushed the court and one of the players was hurt in the chaos (I believe he was out for the season after that). That was a bad idea. Now, rushing the court after the BSC Championship was WELL worth it (even though I just about bought it on the way down the steps).

Beating a I-AA power from a I-AA power conference the year after not even winning a single I-AA game. Yea, that seems like a defining moment of a program to me.

Everyone tries to shoot down the fact that we're I-AA and that beating a I-AA team doesn't mean anything. Being an upper level I-AA is what we need to strive to do at this point.

we would be lucky to come within 4 touchdowns of Texas at halftime.

We've beaten a I-A school that was ranked in the Top-25 before. Any decent I-A victory to me might be worthy of the risk and expense. But I agree that no I-AA team is worthy of that type of action.

As for us Old Hags and our long ago rivalry with JMU, yes we'd be going crazy with a victory over the Dukes. But tearing down the goalposts wouldn't be necessary. It comes across as rather bush league unless it is an upset of monumental proportions.

I understand why the Chant fans went crazy last year since they really don't have much of any history. For CCU it was a defining moment for their program. For us to beat W&M this year would be a defining moment for our new staff and for our student body to believe in the program. It would be awesome but not as pandemonium-inducing as an upset of the Demon Deacons. That would be our first victory over a BCS conference school and you could argue its worthy of the destruction.

Let me put this as nicely and delicately as possible: No current student could care less about the past with LU football and that at one point in time there were some good teams. To the students, the team is horrible, sucks, and is just flat out bad, and that's how it has always been. A win over a marquee I-AA opponent would be the defining point of the program.

No...No...we've beaten Appy State before, we've beaten JMU before, we've even beaten an 1-A program before...it would not be respecting history to pull down the goalposts, even if we beat W&M...

Rushing the field would be good if we beat W&M...and I think the band should have a postgame celebration prepared as well (maybe even a song from the show played standing still in a semi-cirlcle...just blast it...followed by the fight song)

I agree with Slyfox, Wake would be an exception.

Now SuperJon might be right, the students might want to do it...but in the long run it would look stupid...pretty soon we should be competing again with programs like W&M and JMU...no use going overkill...and we want them to respect us so we can maybe in the future get home and homes with them (isn't it something like 2 away games and 1 home with W&M and JMU next year?)

You've beaten App before, you've beaten these other schools before. Big freaking deal. That means jack crap to the students today. App State is so far ahead of Liberty right now it's pathetic to even compare the two. Everyone knows I think we're doing everything right to keep moving forward. However, we're the laughing stock of I-AA football right now, right next to Savannah State. Coach Rocco and Jeff Barber are changing that and have changed that in the eyes of some people in Lynchburg. Bill and Mary were in the semi-finals of the playoffs last year and completely drilled LU. Liberty would've gotten beaten by a lot of DII schools last year. That's the past, I know. This year is different, I know. This year is just like a step up to I-AA from DII. Everything that LU has ever done in the past in terms of football does not mean jack crap to any student on the mountain today. If anyone thinks it does, they're kidding themselves.

We're going to have maybe 500 people in Groves Stadium, and there's no chance we beat them. A packed stadium of LU students would be the place to do it. The only students that'll be at the Wake game are ones that are from the Winston-Salem area.

You think any of us Old Hags would endanger ourselves hanging on a goalpost?

Medic would need to bring down his ride from work if that were to happen.

Yes...but beating Wake Forest would be a fieldgoal post pulling down worthy opponent.

W&M...yes we've never beat them...but we've beaten similar teams...Appy State (actually knocked them out of the playoffs), JMU, etc.

It would be a huge win, but not monumental...and I don't care what the W&M fans think about it :)
