Layer was named the Rams' head basketball coach on April 11, 2000, replacing Ritchie McKay who left to take the vacant head coaching job at Oregon State. Layer was fired by Colorado State on March 12th, 2007. His career record at Colorado State was 103-106, but was only 31-71 in conference play.

I don't think he would touch this team, but that would be a GREAT fit at Liberty. IMO, you surround him with young guys, and have him hand pick his predecessor. Overpay him, overpay his staff, whatever you got to do to get 2 years out of him.

GREAT although VERY unlikely choice.

NOW that is something that Liberty should go WAY out of their way for!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First, never happen. I would prefer RD or TBGTBG to him.

Dean Smith is a very strong advocate of Gay Rights, against the death penalty and is pretty much the biggest Democratic endorsement you can get in North Carolina. So I doubt there is enough money on the east coast to get him to come to Liberty, even if he were young.

This is about basketball, not politics.

Yeah, I know that. But, clearly you didn't follow Dean Smith very much. Basketball and politics weren't separated with him. He used to hold practices at prisons for goodness sakes.

Covert, we've fired people before because it "wasnt about wins and losses (aka not about basketball)" so I think politics and beliefs and lifestyles all play roles...and of all places it plays a role at LU

Dude, I was just kidding. For the record, I was aware that he was actively involved in politics, and there is nothing wrong with that. You are right, though, there is not enough money in the world to convince him to come here.

Exactly. Some people still have trust in people who claim to have integrity...

Yeah, I knew he had to make a choice within 48 hours and knew he turned it down 3 times...I thought for sure he'd make it 4 but I guess not...that's why I did say guess though!

I TOTALLY agree that it would never happen, but if there were a chance, why would you rather have RD or TBG to him? I know he is getting old, but he was a pretty good coach in his day, and probably could take a program in disarray and help it get back on its feet. It would be TERRIBLE though if he came back and failed miserably though!

Don't take this the wrong way, but after taking Arizona to the sweet 16, I'm not sure he wouldn't feel like he is taking a step backwards to come to Liberty. I can't imagine he isn't getting some interest from a mid-major or even a middle to bottom team in a big conference. He is probably a hot name in the coaching circuits right now. It would be a GREAT hire for Liberty, but I don't think he would consider it.

One of the things that is AWESOME about Liberty, but really hinders it is the fact that they will only hire a Christian. I wouldn't want it any other way, but it does limit the pool from which we can draw from. Obviously there are some GREAT Christian coaches out there, but it has to be VERY difficult to find that GREAT one. We have a God that is in control of all things, so I believe He will give us what we need and what is best for us.

FYI! I posted Dean Smith as a 100% joke not knowing some would try and make it a real possibility! WOW!
