Just drove my the stadium and there is about 20 yards of turf down. They are starting at midfield and moving in both directions. Crew of about 20-25 workers. I guess that is progress.

And its not just the green cards from the workers. Looks like they're starting at the 50 and working their way back towards the Ops Center. I thought there was supposed to be some sort of rubber pellett underlay, though?

The sand and rubber infill is applied after the turf pads are down, and after the hash marks, yard line numbers and logos are inserted. The infill is applied with a machine that brushes up the blades of artificial grass. If you look at them now they are about 2 1/2 inches long. The infill is about 2 inches (10 lbs./ sq. ft.), so when it's done it looks like closely cut bermuda.

4:25 pm update.....55 yards are down. i'm sure there is a lot more to do besides lay it down so don't get too excited. on the other hand, this is major progress compared to the last three weeks.

ditto SLY- nice work by SID (seeings as how I've criticized them in the past- WELL DONE)

and thanks TRIBE for the info as well, I believe that was very similar to the procedure done on the FIRST turf surface we had installed in 88 or 89.

the stuff came in REALLY long and they swept sand back into it.

It looks like the turf is either pre-painted, or the "grass" is precolored, as the endzone is already being installed and is already navy.

was it one endzone?

The turf is pre-colored as part of the manufacturing process. It eliminates the need for painting (which around here is huge). Both end zones will be navy blue. Apparently, there was some thought of making them red but JB was told that after a few years, even with the UV protectant in the "grass", the red would have faded a bit and taken a little pinkish tone. I need to back up on something I said a while back. All logos, numbers, hashes and markings will be sewn into the field except for the Big South logo. That will be painted on.

BTW, Peggy -- I found out that the Seamstress actually has a name -- was very impressed w/ the quality of turf we're putting down. She was kind of surprised that we'd gotten "the best stuff you can buy". She said she just came from UVa's practice field and what they put down wasn't anywhere close to what we've got.

You may also see some guys working on the stadium scoreboard here soon. The message center on top -- which hasn't worked since the Guillermin administration -- is being replaced. Down the line, JB wants to replace the whole thing w/ a video board but one step at a time.

Wow! they are really moving fast! I wonder what else they have to do to make it take 10-14 days because it looks as if they will have it all down in 3 days.

Looks great! I'm glad they decided to go with the blue endzones. I had the same thought about the fading red (like the old field once had). Pink didn't do much to strike fear in the hearts of our opponents.

I have been wondering something for a while. Is the new OP's building centered with the goalposts? Every picture I have seen makes it look like it is off-center. I'm sure that could just be camera angle, but I was curious.
