There has been a thread on flamefans before about what podcasts you listen to, and this is very similar to that, but with the same reasons for my what are you reading thread, Im wondering what preachers you listen to. Im wanting to get involved in a bible study non-school associated, i dont see myself doing well in a "commuter care group" and I cant really get one out of church because Im the youth pastor of a small church where im the only guy above highschool and under 30, so im trying to find more places to get more food for my soul.

I listen to Matt Chandler of the Village church, at least once a day, I love his stuff. There is nothing finer to me then sitting on my porch with my ipod listening to one of these with a coke.

I also listen to Francis Chan of Cornerstone Church Simi Valley, and

Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church.

And for any of the other college guys in lynchburg, especially ones who stay for the summer, is anyone else looking for a bible study? Like not so much even of the typical prayer group style but more a hey lets get breakfast or lunch on this day, talk about where were at, what were reading, dive into a verse or chapter, how does it apply type thing, let me know, because I would love to get involved in something.

Im kind of at a point where im bringing alot of stuff in but no one around me (my roommates) care about it, and so im having to lead them and lead my youth group, and im not really being led anywhere by anyone

Cool topic. I am curious to hear the responses. I don't listen to near as many podcasts as I used to. But I am always looking for fresh perspectives.

The only guy who's podcasts i download (and this says a LOT because i don't have time to spend with my ipod everyday) is Ergun Caner. I mean, other than Dane Emerick, he's the only guy at Campus Pastor's office that i have an iota of respect for. (Is Dane even still at the campus pastors office? Anyways, love that guy. Dane is the best!)

I mean, I really don't give a flying flip about anything at LU when it comes to spiritual life, etc... (decades around LU will make u cynical) but the fact that I will even take the time to download and then eventually listen to Ergun's stuff should speak for itself.

Frankly I admit I hadn't looked for a Caner channel. Not a bad suggestion. I'll look past all of the obtuse statements in the rest of the post that don't pertain to the topic.

though at the same time I agree with everything he said. I also listen to Dr. Caners podcasts when he does them, he doesnt do alot though, and his campus church stuff doesnt compare to him speaking other places

Driscoll has been getting hammered lately for some things he's posted, rather innocently, regarding new/old calvinism, and also for some of his use of crude language. And all that criticism is coming from his own Reformed camp.

By the way, he'll be on Nightline on the 26th I believe, they're doing a debate on Satan or hell, I think.

Don't call it obtuse. Think of it as the essential back story and precise detail necessary to fully understand and appreciate the impact of that statement.

Johnnie Moore used to be great. I used to love listening to him. But then like it went from a joke that he had A.D.D. in his services to now it seems like he forces it and goes overboard with it to keep the kids laughing at him. Hes not as dumb as he tries to make himself or as crazy as he presents himself on sunday mornings, so why do it.

My problems with the Spiritual Life of Liberty have much more to do with the whole system Dwayne Carson sits on top of that breeds mediocrity. I mean, look at Kevin Roose in his Unlikely Disciple, he went on a missions trip. The same interview logic set up for making sure someone is saved is used for the missions application and application to be an RA, SLD, PL, etc., and there are far too many of those positions simply doing it for resume purposes and not as a ministry. then with everything else, it basically boils down to "A good christian goes to prayer groups, campus church, convo, campus serve, and tries out for Prayer Leader, then SLD, and then RA. If your not doing those things your not a good christian" and so you have plenty of people on campus learning how to give the appearance of someone dying to self every day and placing themselves under the lordship of Christ, and not enough people who understand its ok to not be ok

and I graduated HS with Mr. Moore. anyone who has asked me knows my opinion of him. im NOT a fan by any stretch of the imagination. IMO once a magician, always smoke and mirrors...

Hmmm, not the experience I had at all after four years on campus, and not at all the attitude I felt or came away with.

But.....that is way off topic.

That experience you had when you were three must have been pretty aweful to still be hanging on to it like you are.

i used to go to brentwood, really loved it, then I realized I didnt need to be bringing my bible. He may be different now, but I stopped going last year after realizing that fact. Plus, if thats your style of church, less than ten minutes away is Blue Ridge Community, which i think is one of the best kept secrets of the area. They are fairly large, but the majority of people have never heard of them.

If I didnt have to go to the church I work at on sundays, I would go to blue ridge.

when were you on campus though?

My problem is that this is the same set up they had before they hit 5,000 students, and we are still using it at twice that size. AAAAAAAAAAAny good leader should understand that just because something works at 100 people, doesnt mean it will work with 1000, if it works with 1000, doesnt mean it will work at 2000. If it works at 5,000, doesnt mean it will work at 10,000.

I think the whole system is great on a smaller scale. But, its gotten too large for there to be to deep of relationships between the higher ups and the lower downs and they havent found the efficient solution. Anyone can fake their way into being an SLD or RA if they know the right answers. And RA's are so busy with their responsibilities that their grades and spiritual life suffer in the end. So then the RA ends up losing his position because his grades drop, which in my mind kind of shows them you have to have good grades to minister. And all this could be avoided if the interview process was just a little bit deeper and tougher for SLD's and PL's, and if the RA's had a little more slack and a little extra help.

Also, the RA's need to be taught the whole exodus 18 model, and understand they dont have to minister to every person, they minister, along with the SLD's, to the Prayer Leaders who minister to the students one on one. Yes they over see everyone, but they dont have to minister to every person.

I only add so much because i dont want people to think im just complaining about a problem and not offering a solution. this is just one of many ideas, but what frustrates me with Dwayne Carson is he is content with the program and is going around teaching other places how to do it like us, when we dont even do it well anymore.

I heard that from a lot of people. They said he didn't use enough Scripture. I've been going since July and that's not nearly the case anymore. I love going there. I've never walked out of a service without having something that spoke to me and that I could apply to my life.

The SLD selections process has gotten much more rigorous in the past 4 years. My FR. year my SLD spotted a 0.4 GPA and was allowed to stick around even though he didnt have the will power to go to class. Not the case anymore. Credit that to MM, who has really stepped up in making the process more difficult.

The PL selection process shows how much work SLD's and RA's put into finding the right people. DC and Co. can really only go by what RA's and SLD's say, so its tough for them to really filter out the uncommitted. So that responsibility lands on the RA's and SLD's and how thorough they are with the ones they select. Ive seen hour interviews and Ive seen no interviews and there is a huge difference in the quality of PL's chosen.

As for the "right answers," within 3 months everyone on the hall (specifically PL's) know who is bogus.

The RA's that get caught with stuff are simply those who attempt to do too much. The RA's who feel its their responsibility to minister to every single one on the hall end up becoming overwhelmed and in turn dont minister enough to any of them. Students then assume theyre supposed to get the perosnal connection (that a PL has) from the RA, then leading to dissatisfaction and rebellion. Or at least thats how I've seen it. Even a constant reminder that RA's cant do everything will go a long way towards keeping halls fruitful.

Is Brentwood still around? I went there my last year at LU ('03) and really enjoyed it (and I can only say that about a handful of churches in my life). What was the pastor's name again?

Ahhhh.......I somehow missed this.

This excuse I have heard from some people over & over. To me, it seems that most of them are not paying attention to what Brentwood is about, IMO. Pastor Jon urges people to get involved in the Community Groups....a great place for Bible study. He & his wife are in one as well. That's what the groups are there for.......to explore deeper into Biblical teachings & their applications. They offer sermon outlines from the messages with more scripture to go over at the groups. He wants the people to invest time in learning with others.

He does use scripture in his sermons, but he also wants to show practical application to everyday living.....something that first-time church goers are interested in. Its a "meet their needs first, then they will be more receptive to your message", sorta thing.

Brentwood was created as a place for people to come to that were tired of what theie past experiences at what they called "traditional church", or had never been to church before. Not that anything is wrong with traditional churches, as Jon has said many times over, just that Brentwood was offering something different. The growth of that church over the last 10 years is proof that many are looking for just that.
