It kind of reminds me of Obama's financial plan of "equality"

Take money from those who make it and give it to those who don't and won't.

FYI Maximus, our wrestling program, which at the time was probably the most successful program we had, was eliminated a number of years ago due to title IX, and only reinstated 2 years ago.

Disclaimer: I have no stats to back my theory up.

I think that the one less scholarship helps explain why there is more parity in mens basketball as opposed to womens. The 14th girl on the Tennessees, Dukes, UNCs, UConns, and Oklahomas of the world would probably be a star at other schools in their same conference, let alone in a smaller conference such as the Big South. You can't really blame them for taking a scholarship to one of the premiere programs and you can't blame UConn for using their full allotment of scholarships, but I think it hurts the game.

It doesn't apply to Liberty because yall have developed an unreal womens program, but the rest of the Big South certainly gets hurt because girls that should be starring in the Big South are instead sitting on the bench in the A-10, Conf USA, etc.

I agree with you. That makes a lot of sense and to further your point, there's actually a 2 scholarship difference. Men's teams have 13 schollies, women have 15.

I know, UConn is just unreal right now! Their team remind me of the Houston Comets back in the early WNBA days. lol. But for real though, do you think they should cut the women's schollies in the power conferences like the Big East, Big 12, etc.? I would like to see it because some of women's games are still insane with the blowouts. The only reason why parity is in the men's game is because of the NBA draft. Nowdays, guys are one-and-done! Teams can't build good chemistry like that.

Parity is good for any sport...except baseball! The Yankees totally ignore the salary cap! lol. If mega teams like the Cowboys, the 49ers, and the Packers can respect the salary cap in the NFL, so should the Yankees in baseball. Anyway, that's another story...

Yeah, it's already been corrected on my personal copy. Waiting to update it on here until the news is made public.

Two theories for why the men have one less schollie:

#1 - You won't be hard-pressed to find someone at a school that'd be willing to walk-on and just be a part of a men's Division I basketball team, even if they're not getting any $$$ for it. I think it's harder to find walk-ons in women's program.

#2 - I bet you that some schools use some roster spots (like 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th men) as their designated "nerds", as in, people with some basketball talent but they're not going to get in the game, these are the guys who are on the roster so the school can say "that's 33% of our roster that's going to graduate right there". Fewer scholarships prevents this from happening on a larger scale.

Look, I'm a UNC Tar Heels fan. They have the best graduation rate out of any #1 seed... probably because they have guys like this on their varsity squad...

I mean, the guy used to be the student body president! He's in the math and latin honor societies! If you think he's there to sub in for Hansborough in a close game, you've got another thing coming.

WOW, that's awful. I always wonder what happened to the wrestling program. Thanks for the info.

I hope we don't make it a regular point to be filling scholarship holes with walkons. Although, if we can't get anybody decent this late in the game, no sense in making the kid pay his way while you've got a scholly sitting on the shelf.

We don't have a scholarship for Spencer, even with Brolin leaving. That one will go to Soko.

Are you guys forgetting we were one scholarship too many and we had to lose one anyways? Now we're right at that level if everyone on the team currently comes back next year.

I'm sorry to see Floyd go, but that gives us room for Soko, and from what it sounds like he is going to be a better player.

:nod As it stands now, everything balances out for 13 scholarship players next year as long as Perez and Soko sign.

IMHO Richie has a bit of a dilemma though. He has 2 back up point guards and 1 scholarship, He clearly has more confidence in the walkon Spencer than he has in Stephene, and I'm not sure if he's really comfortable with either as a legit backup to Jesse.

I don't think it's a dilemma.

James came here to go to school, and happened to play basketball. He staying here even without a scholarship.

Johnny came here to play basketball, and in turn is required to go to school. He's not staying without a scholarship.

Plus I'm sure he's assuming that Johnny will develop as most players do.

I think there are a few scenarios where Spencer gets a scholarship, but I also think they are all growing less and less likely.

James deserves kudos for the job he did for us in a pinch, but he is not Kyle Ohman. I think we can all see how much we missed Jesse, and I suspect if another scholarship were to be available we would more likely go looking for a guard who could come closer to being a legitimate backup if Jessee were to get injured again.
