I think that the one less scholarship helps explain why there is more parity in mens basketball as opposed to womens. The 14th girl on the Tennessees, Dukes, UNCs, UConns, and Oklahomas of the world would probably be a star at other schools in their same conference, let alone in a smaller conference such as the Big South. You can't really blame them for taking a scholarship to one of the premiere programs and you can't blame UConn for using their full allotment of scholarships, but I think it hurts the game.
It doesn't apply to Liberty because yall have developed an unreal womens program, but the rest of the Big South certainly gets hurt because girls that should be starring in the Big South are instead sitting on the bench in the A-10, Conf USA, etc.
Two theories for why the men have one less schollie:
#1 - You won't be hard-pressed to find someone at a school that'd be willing to walk-on and just be a part of a men's Division I basketball team, even if they're not getting any $$$ for it. I think it's harder to find walk-ons in women's program.
#2 - I bet you that some schools use some roster spots (like 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th men) as their designated "nerds", as in, people with some basketball talent but they're not going to get in the game, these are the guys who are on the roster so the school can say "that's 33% of our roster that's going to graduate right there". Fewer scholarships prevents this from happening on a larger scale.
Look, I'm a UNC Tar Heels fan. They have the best graduation rate out of any #1 seed... probably because they have guys like this on their varsity squad...

I mean, the guy used to be the student body president! He's in the math and latin honor societies! If you think he's there to sub in for Hansborough in a close game, you've got another thing coming.
