James, a forward for JMU, collapsed tonight in the middle of the JMU ODU game. He was sitting on the bench, and the next thing I know I look up and the game is stopped and the medical staff is huddled around him and they're bringing a stretcher out. Word has it that he was able to sit up a bit and was taken to the hospital. He's had some heart problems this season, so this is probably not just a case of dehydration. Please keep him in your prayers tonight.

I couldn't hear this from my perspective, but this scares me even more:

I was in the student section right next to the bench, and he was making some very scary noises. He was gasping for air very loudly, coughing, sounded like the worst asthma attack I have ever heard. It was incredibly eerie listining to him fight for every breath. I just pray he is okay.

According to JMU Head Coach Matt Brady, this had absolutely nothing to do with his heart problems that he had been experiencing throughout the year. This opens the door to a full recovery AND rejoining the team.

James Out At Least Through Saturday

Doctors are still unsure what caused Juwann James to collapse during Wednesday's game against Old Dominion, but he will still sit out at least the next two practices and Saturday's game at North Carolina-Wilmington.

JMU coach Matt Brady said that doctors don't believe James is having a recurrence of the pericarditis that afflicted him earlier this year, however, and that most signs are positive.

“We’re still trying to get to the conclusion of all of the tests that have been administered to date,” Brady said. “There’s been a number of them. I think it looks very positive for Juwann. We don’t think it’s anything structurally deficient with any of his organs, obviously. We think his short-term and long-term health is very solid, but he’s still undergoing evaluations and a number of the tests are still, we’re waiting on results, so it’s still inconclusive to draw any long-term conclusion on where he is, but we’re hopeful that he’ll return to us sometime, at least in practice, after the weekend.”

James Awaits Answer

HARRISONBURG - Six days have passed since Juwann James collapsed in front of the James Madison bench during the Dukes' loss to Old Dominion, but doctors still do not know why it happened.

Until they do, the star forward said he probably will remain on the sidelines.

"My health comes first, even though I love the game," James said Tuesday. "I just want to know what's wrong with me."

JMU coach Matt Brady said team doctors have ruled out pericarditis, an inflammation of the membrane surrounding the heart that kept James out for seven games earlier in the season. The coach also said they've found nothing structurally wrong with James' heart.

But as long as no one has answers, no one is pushing James to play. He'll miss today's 7:30 p.m. Colonial Athletic Association basketball game at Georgia State, although he will travel to Atlanta with the team, and Brady isn't predicting when the Dukes' captain will play again.

James is scheduled to undergo a stress test Thursday.

"Until those are concluded, and there's a consensus and all the results are back, I think it's premature to predict when he'll be back," Brady said.

That there isn't a consensus is starting to become more and more of a concern, especially because last week's incident was preceded by one in the Dukes' game at George Mason on Jan. 17 when James left with tightness in his chest.

Doctors have not been able to explain either incident.

"I think what's discouraging is that there's nothing definitive about why he's had two attacks," Brady said. "I don't take a lot from knowing what it isn't and, quite frankly, I don't think he does either."

Indeed, he doesn't. James said he does not want to play until he knows what he's dealing with.

"When it first happened, I was just thinking I'd go to the doctor, they're going to tell me what's wrong and I'm going to kind of move on and be preventive out there," James said. "But right now the only thing I'm worried about is them not telling me what's wrong. That's the thing I think is going to get me back on the court is when they tell me what's wrong, what's actually causing it."

As long as James and the Dukes don't know, they have to move forward without him and figure out how to win with the rotation they have, a rotation that includes three freshmen and just one player over 200 pounds. Brady's biggest concern with his new lineup, he said, is that it doesn't have a reliable scoring threat.

It has three players who average double-digit points - senior swingman Kyle Swanston (11.5 ppg), freshman forward Julius Wells (10.7) and freshman guard Devon Moore (10.2) - but no one is as consistent as James (14.4 ppg).

"I still don't know from game to game where our offense is coming from," Brady said. " ... Yet we've been in every game."

To continue to be in every game without James, Brady said, the Dukes "need to strive" to be better defensively.

The team they're playing tonight has obviously had a similar philosophy. Georgia State entered the season with five transfers from BCS conference schools gaining their eligibility, which made the Panthers a possible sleeper in the CAA.

However, the transfer talent has not made as much of a difference as some expected. Redshirt junior guard Joe Dukes, a transfer from Wake Forest, leads the team with 12.7 points and 4.5 assists per game, but his status today will be a game-time decision. He was suspended for the last game because of academic issues, a Georgia State spokesman said.

The Panthers are 6-16 so far this season and 4-7 in the conference, taking losses in seven of their last nine games.

"Obviously, we're disappointed with where we are," Georgia State coach Rod Barnes said last week. "Any time you bring in new faces it takes some time, because we have so many guys trying to get in the rotation. ... Each night out, a different transfer has stepped up and played well, but we haven't gotten everybody playing well at the same time."

Georgia State is at least staying in games with defense.

While it's last in the league in scoring - it averages just 58.8 points per game and has broken the 60-point mark just once in a conference game - Georgia State allows only 63 points per game overall and only 58 in conference contests.
