I think the sentiment at the time was an ACC assistant would be a much better hire for the program than a D3 head coach (Shaver was at Randolph Macon, at the time).Shaver was actually at Hampden-Sydney and was one of the greatest coaches in D3 history

Imagine being an assistant coach, trying to find a way to describe Liberty’s Jesse Sanders in a scouting report.http://www.newsadvance.com/lna/sports/c ... ker/11078/
There are two major samples by which Sanders can be judged. Tuesday, during the Flames’ upset of Virginia in Charlottesville, Sanders was simply a distributor, finishing with eight assists, no turnovers and just two field-goal attempts.
But during an 88-66 victory over Coker in the first round of the Liberty Thanksgiving Classic on Friday night at Vines Center, Sanders became an entirely different player. He scored 15 points, hit 7 of 8 field goals and had two assists. Just four games into his college career, the freshman has shown an ability to adapt to however a team wants to defend him.
“He’s a weird matchup,” Liberty coach Ritchie McKay said. “When you look at our team, you see (Seth) Curry and say, wow, that dude is good. Anthony Smith is the preseason player of the year and Brolin (Floyd) hasn’t even gotten going yet. Jesse’s kind of the forgotten man. He just wins games. He helps your team win games.”
Sanders was twice named the home school national player of the year, and he’s had plenty of experience winning. His HCYA Warriors team in Houston won 41 games during his senior year. He didn’t play for a typical home-school program, either. The Warriors regularly competed against the top 5A and prep schools in the Houston area.
