BIG SOUTH ANNOUNCES TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty’s Josh McDougal and Tiffany Evans of Radford have been named the Big South Conference Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Athletes of the Year, respectively, the League announced today. The male and female Track & Field Athlete of the Year is an annual award voted on by the League’s Head Coaches at their annual June meeting.
McDougal, a sophomore from Peru, N.Y., increased his career All-America count to six during the 2005-06 season, earning the honor four times. McDougal started the season off by winning the 2005 New Balance Big South Cross Country championship, and went on to take fourth in the NCAA Cross Country Championship. During the indoor season, he took first in the Mile with a time of 4:03.04 and finished first in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 7:59.45, setting meet records in both events. At the NCAA National Indoor Meet, McDougal took fifth-place in the 3,000 and fourth in the 5,000 to pick up his second and third All-America honors. He wrapped up the year by taking the No. 1 spot in the 1,500-meters at the Big South Championship and finishing ninth overall in the country in the event at the NCAA Championship to round out his All-American count of the season.
Evans, a junior from Dumfries, Va., captured one All-America honor and three Big South individual titles during the 2005-06 Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field seasons. During the indoor season, Evans took first in the weight throw at the Big South Championship with a mark of 19.35 meters (63’6”) and earned All-American at the national meet with a seventh-place finish. She also won the shot put at the Big South indoor meet with a throw of 14.57 meters (47’9.75”). She finished up the 2005-06 season with a League-record toss of 15.10 meters in the outdoor shot put (49’6.60”) to finish first, as well as posting a first-place finish in the hammer throw with a throw of 57.17 meters (187’07”). At the NCAA Regional Outdoor Track & Field Championship, she finished 16th in the region in the hammer throw.
