BIG SOUTH ANNOUNCES TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Liberty’s Josh McDougal and Tiffany Evans of Radford have been named the Big South Conference Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Athletes of the Year, respectively, the League announced today. The male and female Track & Field Athlete of the Year is an annual award voted on by the League’s Head Coaches at their annual June meeting.

McDougal, a sophomore from Peru, N.Y., increased his career All-America count to six during the 2005-06 season, earning the honor four times. McDougal started the season off by winning the 2005 New Balance Big South Cross Country championship, and went on to take fourth in the NCAA Cross Country Championship. During the indoor season, he took first in the Mile with a time of 4:03.04 and finished first in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 7:59.45, setting meet records in both events. At the NCAA National Indoor Meet, McDougal took fifth-place in the 3,000 and fourth in the 5,000 to pick up his second and third All-America honors. He wrapped up the year by taking the No. 1 spot in the 1,500-meters at the Big South Championship and finishing ninth overall in the country in the event at the NCAA Championship to round out his All-American count of the season.

Evans, a junior from Dumfries, Va., captured one All-America honor and three Big South individual titles during the 2005-06 Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field seasons. During the indoor season, Evans took first in the weight throw at the Big South Championship with a mark of 19.35 meters (63’6”) and earned All-American at the national meet with a seventh-place finish. She also won the shot put at the Big South indoor meet with a throw of 14.57 meters (47’9.75”). She finished up the 2005-06 season with a League-record toss of 15.10 meters in the outdoor shot put (49’6.60”) to finish first, as well as posting a first-place finish in the hammer throw with a throw of 57.17 meters (187’07”). At the NCAA Regional Outdoor Track & Field Championship, she finished 16th in the region in the hammer throw.

Here is Chris' preview of Josh at US Nationals:
McDougal competing at national meet at IU

By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
June 22, 2006

Josh McDougal was feeling a bit worn down toward the end of the spring track & field season, and he was worried that it might be due to a low iron count.

The Liberty University sophomore got a checkup. The diagnosis: He was just tired. He's felt better recently and is in top form for the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Indianapolis.

McDougal is one of four current or former Liberty athletes competing this week. His younger brother Jordan ran in the junior 5,000-meter race Wednesday and took sixth in the seven-man race, finishing in 15 minutes, 39.59 seconds, more than a minute worse than last year, when he finished in 14:29.35 and took fourth.

Georgetown's Andrew Bumbalough won the event in 14:46.01.

Markus Greenleaf, a rising sophomore, will compete today in the junior 100, with the prelims at 11:20 a.m. local time and the finals at 1 p.m. Friday, Greenleaf will run the 200.

Danielle McNaney, a current Liberty graduate assistant, will compete in the heptathlon beginning Friday.

Josh McDougal is coming off another stellar season at Liberty in which he earned four All-America honors and was named the Big South male track athlete of the year for the second straight year.

McDougal finished ninth in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA outdoor championships in Sacramento earlier this month.

This is Josh McDougal's first appearance in the open meet. In 2004, he ran the 5,000 in the junior national meet in 14:24.88 to finish second to Galen Rupp by more than eight seconds.

The competition in the 10,000 race will be tough. McDougal, who qualified with a mark of 28:49.79, is one of 20 runners who has declared for the race.

Abdi Abdirahman has the top qualifying mark at 27:22.81, followed by Anthony Famiglietti, a veteran of steeplechase races, at 27:37.74.

Meb Keflezighi, who set the American record in the 10,000 with a 27:13.98 race in May 2001, is also entered.

From the Cleveland fishwrap:
Pace to run for Liberty:

Recent Rhodes graduate Bonita Denise Pace has received a full scholarship to run track at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

Pace participated in the 4x400-meter and 4x200-meter relays last month at the state track meet. She was the anchor leg in the 4x200, helping the Rams place second in that race.

Pace made the honor roll with a 3.0 grade-point average and plans to study nursing.

Is there a list somewhere of the new Cross Country (and Track) recruits for the fall? If Tolsma can pick up a couple of impact freshman (especially on the men's side), we will be in for a treat this year!

congrats to our men and ladies who made the list. To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently-completed academic year.
