Work on the turf was halted so the 4th of July festivities could be set up on the gravel lot that used to be the field. I would expect them back out there on Monday.

I thought it was funny that all of the kids still played football on the field on the 2nd of July, despite there being no field. I would not want to be chasing someond down in a big gravel pit. If you have put down some tarp on the other hand...

I wonder if they'll get a new tarp for the new field before the next fourth of July.

I would prefer a cool one that is insulated to protect it from the burn markes from next years fireworks. It should have the LU logo on it...instead of the plain brown one that we have now.

Oh come on now AG, they had a lot of rain the last week or so. No need to come down on em for something that they can't control

There has been ALOT of sunshine between the cloud-bursts, too. No excuses. That should be the theme of the Rocco Era.

I'll grant you that. But again, Im sure they want this job done right. Quickly of course (since Football camp starts in 3 weeks), but Im sure JB wants it done right. The weather looks real nice for Monday so Im sure that the guys will be right back at it.

Yes, I think we ALL want it done right. That is too big an investement.

BTW, even though I "coined it," I like the slogan NO EXCUSES for the Rocco Era. It certainly is better than "we are 3 plays from being 5-2."

SOmebody mentioned to me that they are actually going to have the gravel go from end to end and side to side, which means that the field turf is even going to go over that red stuff that was on the edges of the astroturf field

I am really looking forward to seeing the finished product. Any idea if they plan to use the old turf of batting cages, etc.?

Not sure that much of the old turf was usable. The contractors literally had to rip it out.

HBURG we were debating that before and someone (I think Libertine) advised that is wasn't feasable to reuse the stuff due to the layers of underlayment mat'l that would be needed.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, no doubt

The old turf was installed so well that it was pretty much destroyed in the removal process.
Here's the state of things as of Friday afternoon:

Is that gravel that is being put down? Is there anything that is supposed to go on top of that gravel besideds the turf itself? In other words I would think that some kind of padding would get put down before the turf is layed down. How about the drainage system.

Yes, that's how it's done. JMU's field is actually 90% shale with a fuzzy green tarp over it.

OK, putting sarcastic reaction aside. A passerby asked me yesterday if we were going to be planting new grass in the gravel. I barely kept a straight face.

Yes, that's gravel. It's a leveling agent. Yes, padding will go on top. The drainage system from the prior field is adequate for this one and will remain.

What is taking them so long to get to the broken glass layer?

The contractor is still waiting on a shipment of rusty nails and live botulism.

whats the deal with the concrete truck? it was alluded earlier that the drain system in place is fine and NOT being changed, so are they pouring footers for something, or new steps, or maybe some sort of retaining wall?

JB told me that he wanted a brick wall infront of the stands with sponsors.. im not sure if that was for this year or not

makes sense. They'd need a footer for that, and you might as well do that now while the place is torn up.

will be, aesthetically, very nice as well.

i should have got a pic of the worker sleeping next to the old fieldhouse when i got these pics. speaking of possibly putting brick on the sidelines, wake forest, put a synthetic looking brick on the sideline walls of groves stadium last year and made that place look a lot better.

Virginia Tech put Hokie stone on it's endzones to help folks watching on TV know it was VT as the Hokie stone is rather unique.
