Ten years ago, when CBS held the television rights for the winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, the network managed to broadcast 170 hours of coverage over 17 days.

Beginning with Friday’s opening ceremony in Beijing, NBC Universal, this year’s Olympic rights-holder, will attempt to churn out 3,600 hours of coverage over a similar period.

I saw one or two matches back in '04, and I was completely hooked. I can't wait to actually learn
the rules and watch a little bit more this year.

You can imagine my delight when I opened the latest Entertainment Weekly mag, and read the Olympic TV guide,
and found Handball to be one of the "must see" pics. The description below is awesome, too.

Last month, Croatian handball superstar Ivan Cupic was practicing at an Olympic training camp when his wedding ring caught in a wire fence, shearing his finger. Most of that digit was amputated, and Cupic can no longer play. The fact that the Croatians are still favored to win the gold medal tells you how awesome these guys are.

I do know that Richard and Brian Harrell, who were on the baseball team, competed for South Africa's team in the 2000 Olympics... but they didn't play handball.

that was my first exposure to the game too. always loved playing that in middle school. every day I would be like "man i hope we get to play handball today!"

You did not want to be the goalie because in the gym we played in there were these large pads on the wall on opposite ends of the court and those would be the goals and it was not hard to give up 7 or 8 goals easy unless you were real quick on your feet

Really its more soccer based than basketball based (and has the high scoring of lacrosse only without the sticks)

Basically, it's soccer, but you use your hands instead of your feet, more fast paced, and even more high scoring than lacrosse, Wikipedia says each team often scores 20 or more goals and even 30 goals sometimes.

one of the most important rules that is distinctively different than most other sports:
A player may only hold the ball for three seconds and may only take three steps with the ball in hand. After taking three steps the player will have to make a dribble with one hand in order to continue moving forward, but if the ball is held in both hands after making a dribble and the player makes another dribble, a free throw will be given to the other team for a "double dribble"
