My power flickered a few times yesterday afternoon, then when I was at Bryson's last night it did the same thing. Add to that the e-mail I got this morning that said it was doing it on campus yesterday (even causing all of the A/C units to be manually restarted) and it got me wondering. Anyone know what happened to make the power flicker across the entire city when the weather was nice?

According to WSET, a power line wire snapped over near the TV station, causing about 1100 people to be without power. I don't know if that had anything to do with your problem or not, Super.

That would make sense...SJ and I live just a few miles from there...it even caused stop lights to go out on Greenview drive

Voltage problems in Appalachian Power’s transmission system caused power spikes and outages across Lynchburg and surrounding counties Wednesday afternoon and evening.

Appalachian Power Corporate Communications Manager Todd Burns said at about 4:30 p.m., operators noticed “transmission operations” on the 138 kilovolt system that supplies power to the Lynchburg area.

“It appears that something is on a line, or something is causing a short,” Burns said.

I don't understand this, why are PC's not equipped with built-in batteries in cases like this when your power source goes out? That would seem to make complete sense to me.

they make batteries like you are talking about, but they are pretty big. if they built it into the computer the price would go up a ton and the case for the computer would be much bigger

Uh, laptops can run entirely off of batteries, and they're very small.

So in other words a battery that can last about 5-10 minutes, long enough to save your stuff before it shuts down. It recharges when the computer turns back on.

I have heard of battery backup thank you kindly. and I do get your explanation (my dad taught me everything he knows about computers and still does) Im just concurring with JDUB and then expounding upon it by mentioning the fact that batteries small enough to power laptops have been developed and improved upon over a number of years. If someone wants to develop a battery that can primarily power a desktop or even serve as a secondary power souce in the event there is no electrical power then more power (no pun intended) to them.
