I just recently got a DSLR camera. I am wondering what others out there use for their photo editing software. Do you use Photoshop? If so...which one do you recommend? It is so expensive...is there a place to find it reasonably priced? Does the bookstore sell Photoshop for a discounted price like some of the other software?

I have heard good things about Apple's Aperture 2 program, but am not sure if that is compatible with a PC....

Any thoughts or suggestions?

And no...Medic...MS Paint is not an option I am looking at

What camera did you get? Nikkon comes with PicturePerfect. Or maybe it's PictureProject. It's a pretty basic program but a lot of the time, that's all you need. Another option that may sound stupid, but flickr uses photo editing tools from Picnik.com which are surpisingly awesome for edit tools, not to mention web based tools. It's got a button called "Auto-fix" that makes a regular picture look amazing 90% of the time.

CS3 is the best. period. it takes a while to learn how to use, but you can do so much you can't with other programs.

it all depends on what you want to do to your photos. if you just want to take out red eye, you can do that for free with picassa. i heard a free webbased photoshop is coming out, don't know if its been released yet or not though

I got a Canon 30D. I have used Picassa in the past, but it is fairly basic in the photo editing. I have not looked at the Flickr software...I did look at Flickr though as a hosting site. I am debating between using that, smugmug or zenfolio.

Amen. The price is right, too.

I've been using gimpShop lately, and like it. It's got most of the features of Photoshop, but the price of GIMP.

If you want something online, I've heard good things about Splashup, but I haven't used it myself yet.

PhotoShop CS3 is a waste of money for the casual user. Unless you are going to be selling pictures, don't spend the money.

Use GIMP or Paint.Net. You can do a lot of the same things and they are FREE

That's assuming you pay money for it.

For those who have gone the GIMP/Gimpshop route. Since I have never used Photoshop (and never will pay that kind of money for photo editing software) I will be learning from square one either way. Is there any advantage to Gimpshop?

Price.

I won't ever use most of the features in Gimpshop. I didn't use a lot of the stuff in Gimp. But they're free, so I don't feel like I wasted money. If I bought Photoshop and didn't get the use out of it that I thought I would, I'd feel like I wasted a bunch of money.

If you end up using the software a lot, and decide it's worth it to spend the money on Photoshop, that's another thing. But I think for amateur use, cheaper is better.

OK, I didn't phrase my question very well. Photoshop is not an option for me due to cost. I understand that GIMP will do most of the same stuff for free, but has a very different layout and menu system, so it's harder to learn for people who have used Photoshop. GimpShop is a hack which takes the GIMP program and makes it look and work more like Photoshop. I was trying to get an opinion as to relative benefits of GIMP v GimpShop for someone starting from scratch.

Heck, they're free, and I have a high speed connection and plenty of hard drive, I can just install them both and see which one I like better.

OK -- sorry, I misunderstood what you were getting at.

The benefit to Gimpshop would be that you could buy a Photoshop training book and it will help you use Gimpshop. GIMP can be a bit harder to use, and there's little documentation available. That's the only real benefit to using one over the other.

go on ebay and get an academic copy of Photoshop. Your not making money off it - then that's legal.

Learn Photoshop then you can do more than just fix pictures, but help your church out with projects, design avatars for FlameFans, design BCs for your wife's Tupperware parties - the list goes on and PS experience is a plus in any profession.

HMO - you going to whip up on us in Softball again???????? I'm going to try and suck as much as I did last year AGAIN:)
