It sounded like to me that the buzzer went off after the ball was released, so the basket should have counted

Summerville won the game... and some of their fans that were at the game said that they thought the shot should have counted.

It's tough to tell from the video exactly where the ball was when the horn sounded. The "C" official came in waving it off as soon as it went in. You can see him coming in at the bottom of the screen when they show the replay.

That's all fine and dandy but there was .1 left on the shotclock when it left the kid's hands.

The other school was jobbed by three knucklehead refs who were paying attention.

Thats the most amazing one I've ever seen hands down. It was on the SportsCenter Top 10 FIVE times: #9, #7, #5, #3, and #1

Trailing Duke 86-78 in Carmichael Auditiorium on Senior Day 1974 with 17 seconds left, it looked as if all hope was gone for the Heels. Bobby Jones hits two free throws, 86-80. John Kuester steals an inbounds pass and hits a quick layup, 13 seconds left, 86-82. Duke mishandles another inbounds play resulting in a Bobby Jones basket, 86-84, with six seconds left. The Tar Heels quickly foul Duke's Pete Kramere – as the front end of his one-and-one misses and Carolina snares the rebound, calling time out with only three seconds left on the clock.

Then history is made.

Mitch Kupchak sends a perfect baseball pass to freshman Walter Davis at halfcourt. Davis covers enough ground in three dribbles to launch a desperation 28-foot jump shot that banks in, sending Carmichael Auditorium into what Woody Durham called "Pan-dee-mon-i-umm!"

The Tar Heels go on to defeat the Blue Devils in overtime behind a 31-point effort by Davis.

What a crazy ending. I'm happy for Summerville (the school is like 4 miles from me), but you gotta feel for that Spartanburg crew...they thought they had it won.

I was at the Summerville-Sumter game alluded to in the first article. A fan sitting beside me put the pieces of the puzzle together for me. As emotional a moment in a gym during a basketball game I've ever seen.

ps - for what it's worth, I think the officials got it right in the state final.
