Is it cruel that I sorta laughed at this? I do feel sorry for the kids. The tone of the zoo dude (his matter of fact statements) is what made me laugh.

"The lady who was there threw some plastic chairs at the snake, but you've got to remember that this is about 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of aggressive muscle," Rose said.

...and they did not want to try to pull the dog out for fear of killing the snake.

I tell you what...if it were my dog...the snake would have already been made into a nice pair of python boots.

The dog was already dead by that time; it wouldn't have mattered if they pulled him out or not.

But the dog would have taken the snake with him.

Snakes like this are becoming a huge problem in the south east. Pythons and Boa's often give birth to over 100 baby snakes at time. People who owned them as pets released them into the everglades other swampy areas. The snakes are now breeding and causing a huge problem. The snakes are also really adaptable and in the next 10-20 years may move as far north as Virginia.

You know, you would think that having seen the snake stalk the dog for several days, including being in the dog's BED, they would have thought, "oh, hey, maybe this thing is trying to kill my dog and we might should kill the snake."

Just my $.02.

Wonder what they'd have done if it were their kid... hmm... Must not have loved the dog too much.

Removing the half-swallowed dog could have harmed or even killed the python, Rose said, because dogs have sharp teeth and claws that could do the snake internal damage if it were wrenched out.
Once this starts, just cut the snake it half and the dog lives.

Constrictors do not swallow their prey alive. The dog was already dead. (I used to have a pet Burmese python). Whether the snake should have been killed is an individual choice. I can't see the point in it once the damage was done. The family needed to intervene earlier by either killing the snake, or perhaps better capturing it and releasing it in a remote location.

olldflame has constricted the correct.

by the time the snake had the dog in its mouth it was already too late.
