We can all have our opinions but those of us who see things in a different light should be able to voice ours with everyone attacking because we are not going to bless someone's agenda. It is all about the $$$ and power and weak schedules under JB.

to clarify, then- you're saying that JB is the reason our teams have weak schedules? :dontgetit

I do not see where any overt attacking is taking place. Many of us disagree with checkers, here...but he DOES make a valid point in regards to infusion of money. I know of at least one very successful coach who scheduled the tough teams, made the NCAA tournament, and left LU due to the annual March budget freezes and other budgetary concerns.

As far as JB goes, he HAS been given the $$, and the authority that previous AD's never enjoyed...and it has created a whole new dynamic on campus.

Ain't that the truth.

I mean, when you get married you need to at least wait more than two years to start looking around...
Everybody needs to cut Barber some slack here....he is looking out for his family and what he feels is best for him. It is not like he has applied at Longwood, Emory and Henry, LC, Averett, AND Hampden Sydney...trying to get out of LU. He has applied at LSU...one of the premiere jobs in the country for an AD.
I'm not knocking JB. It was a joke about comparing it to marriage.

Funny how Checkmate and GRM always show up at the same time and always say the same negative things.
Can one of you 2 please post 1 positive comment. It would make me feel better.
I would also wish for you to come to grips with your bitterness and move on from whatever confrontation caused you both to be such giant jerks.
Life goes on please move on or move away!

Thanks fumble...my point is that the position has been upgraded. When LCA was given new facilities and the commitment to give the graduates free tuition at LU it became the largest private hs in VA. The institutional $$ set them up. Give the credit where it is due JF and now JFjr.

I find nothing wrong with the man looking elsewhere and to move up in his career...but with the statements he has made in the past about JF's vision and such it has kind of made me think he isn't here for the long term....at least he is doing this now while his tenure is still young so that when he does go elsewhere its not such a shock....

I appreciate the things JB has done and when he does move on the guy who takes his place will be appreciative as well. There are many Division I programs with money that aren't that sucessful. So money isn't eveything...its what you do with that money and how it is used and JB has done a great job with the resources he has been given....

I agree that Barber is getting more resources than in previous staffs. With that being said, you can't make that point without also saying that Barber's staff is having the most success as a department in school history. One cannot be said without the other.

checkmate wrote:You guys act like JB has done something beyond what he has done. Yes he has organized the $$$ that the administration opened up for him and put up new flag poles, painted a few steps and doubled a few budgets. It is an administrative job unlike coaches who compete everyday against other DI programs. He didn't build us an FOC, stadium or arena. He is here in the time frame of a greater commitment to athletics from a $$$ standpoint. Burch and Graham would have looked alot better if they had been given the green $$$ light. Let's not act like he walks on water...he can just infuse $$$ given by the institution to his department. We have coaches who if they had chose to pursue secular platforms could be successful at any level. Successful coaches were in place before Barber and will be here long after he is gone. And with the level of commitment from the university some AD with find this his dream job and use it for a ministry not just use it.
He may have a larger budget, but he's also raising exponentially more through donations and other types of giving than any other administration. Case in point is this year's basketball season: no one would be donate the money to put together promotions and things of that nature during the previous staff. This year they're getting more donations and you're seeing more things during games, whether it's halftime shows, t-shirt giveaways, or whatever. There's also major Vines Center renovations planned. We've gotten suites for football, a jumbotron, and there are plans for other things for when the time comes. There are plans to upgrade every single facility on campus for every single sport. To say he's done nothing is absolutely ignorant, and something I expect from someone like you.
Listen, in keeping things fair you can't boldly make the statement that barber is raising more than any other administration because the bottomline is you can't see Liberty's financials and no matter what your told by sources you can't prove that fact. If he is, great though....don't get me wrong im happy about his ability to relate with fans and alumni.

Lets just say when Proto was in charge of athletic marketing, the promotions you see at games now doesnt even compare....we threw gaming systems into the stands not t-shirts. There was a 1-2 minute highlight reel before every game that i haven't seen in years but just the thought of Gabe Martin rising up and dunking on someones head ( while the other team all looked up and some covered there mouths in amazement) was intimidating as well just before tip-off. Promotions are good this year dont' get me wrong, but that year was the best by far in my opinion.

Plus ive seen plans or sketches of facility improvements for years that have been tweaked or reworked.....the bottomline like everyone says now is JB got the checkbook opened. And please don't get me wrong here, im glad he has it and it appears so far he is spending very wisely.

J.B. has done all the right things while he was here. Hopefully the search committee has the same standards as the student fish wrap. But if he is offered the job, He would be very foolish for not taking it. It is a top 10 AD job. But JB, if your reading............ Yellow and Purple are terrible after leaving the great red white and blue!

I love the Go Flames!

Good job! Keep up the good work!

Look JB is a doing a great job with what he has been given. You would expect that part of hiring aa experienced AD for the first time is giving him more money and more power. So he got it and has used it to the best possible. I hope he stays, but if he leaves I can't blame him!

He has never been an AD before. Celebrate the university's commitment not somebody who is looking for his next gig before he has accomplished anyhting of significance. LU gave him his first AD job. It wasn't like he had been an AD at even a DII institution. I grew up around Marines...loyalty in that generation was not self-promotion. Find a grinder who will commit to an athletic strategic plan and truly take us to another level.

well he has done a great job for his first time being an AD. He has created much more excitment around LU athletics than i have ever seen in my time at LU. so stop with your dumb bitterness towards him already and quit living in the past. You haven't said a positive thing on this board ever since you have been on here. But i expect that from someone like you.

Sorry it :rainy on your parade. First there is alot of positives at LU. Secondly I don't need grm to hold my hand in expressing what is truth. There is way too many inconsistencies to say we are the only negative ones. Just because we see another perspective and are willing to articulate it some of you cry foul. Well we are moving on to the future just that some want it build on solid christian prinicples not slick manipulation of a self-serving agenda.

Someone touched on perhaps the GREATEST accomplishment that JB has brought to LU Athletics and that is a complete change of attitude and culture. Say what you will but you cannot take that away from him. This took place under JF and now continues under JFjr. That has something to do with resources but more about leadership. Could others have done the same thing in the same circumstances? Sure. But others also could have screwed it up. JB did not. THAT is his biggest accomplishment.
As for bringing in money I can only speak to what was observed by a "very good friend" of mine. I know what they brought in and it wasn't bad. With the resources that JB has available it would stand to follow that more money is coming in. Further by enticing Jerry's "Big Donors" to give directly to athletics instead of JFM is a big deal. What are the reasons for that? I have theories but the bottom line is it was accomplished
In regards to schedules, that would be the domain of our coaches. Football and basketball make their own schedules, so that would follow that any blame for the SOS would be theirs not JB's.
