As a LU grad that was in school during the 'glory days' a few years back when Larry Blair, David Dees, Gabe Martin, etc. were reaking havoc on the Big South, take comfort in knowing you guys aren't the first to go through this battle. I clearly remember a game a few years back against VMI, when the 'West Point rejects' cheer came out, and a girl behind me almost started crying. She started talking about how as LU students we needed to be above reproach and how a chant like that just hurt our witness. It honestly all but ruined the game for me, just knowing that someone in our student body actually took a chant like that to be that serious. I honestly think a good portion of the student body every year shows up in Lynchburg after spending the first 17 or 18 years of their lives under a rock some where. Yelling shut up or sit down loser or something like that in the spirit of competition is fine. If we can't be passionate about our school than what on earth would make anyone else want to come to school there? Heaven forbid the majority of LU's students ever have the misfortune of finding themselves at a major D-I school where basically anything goes. I mean I remember Duke going up to Maryland a few years ago and students chanting F-you J.J., and sexual things about his sister. If that ever happened at a Liberty game, home or away...well let's just say most of our sheltered student body would probably need medical attention and long-term counseling. I remember the ENTIRE student section chanting 'we're not purple' at High Point before the Big South championship game in 04.' I also remember chanting 'Pete's a whiner," at former Coastal coach Pete Strickland.
Now, busting on an opponent's uniform color or calling a coach a whiner might cost you your salvation, or at least your membership card in the 'above reproach club.'
