You're entitled to that opinion.

However, a good general rule is that if you're asked by a police office not to do something, you don't do it.

I agree with that. However, once I was given permission by someone higher than him on the totem pole, I felt it was ok to do it.

If I'm told by a patrol officer not to do something, but the chief tells me I can, I'm going to listen to the chief, and if the patrol officer tells me not to do it again, I'll tell him I have permission from the chief.

What's sad is that we're actually having this discussion. I hate living in a bubble where "shutup" has officially become a word that makes people challenge your faith. It's athletics for crying out loud.

I gave up after the "You Suck" sign got banned at the VMI game last year.

It is total hypocritical crap if Caner and Johnnie Moore can say sucks, and shut up, but we can't at an athletic event.

We should be able to follow the spiritual example of our spiritual leaders.

Caner has even said "Go to hell." from the pulpit.

Can I yell that at VMI's coach on Saturday?

Nope.

I know they are human, but they make a habit of using words that we cannot.

That's not fair at all.

dude...yell away...one of my favorite things about JF himself would be poking me to yell at officials b/c he knew he couldnt do it...I'd have bruises on my body from him telling me to yell

He even got me in trouble with a police officer at a NCAA game at ODU (women's)...he giggled

Yall keep it clean and respectful....if anyone wants to take LU to the next level like everyone says they do...passionate fans is where it begins....yell away...seriously yell away

EDIT: I wrote all of that without reading your post...and from personally knowing very well Dr. Godwin and Carson...I cant say they'd have a problem with the word shut up...honestly this doesnt even rank on the things either of them would be concerned with...maybe I'm wrong (I have been before) but I just really doubt they care about the word "shut up"

As a prof...and as a Christian...I see NOTHING wrong with what you were saying (other than what you said about the cop). I have said worse, and I am sure I will say worse. It is not a sin to be annoying.

Unfortunately, there are people in high places (not to mention over-zealous RA's) that "just don't get it" yet...and are stuck in the moralist 80's and earlier. They may yearn for the "old style LBC style"...but that ain't happening. Supe...you and your group keep fighting the good fight....and keep it CLEAN...and things will work themselves out.

lol @ "shut up" being vulgar. "You suck" comes from something somewhat sexually suggestive, although it's pretty much lost that meaning. But I can see avoiding it. Shut up just means to close your mouth. It's antagonizing, but that's the point. All in all, if I were a student, I would have just sat and watched the game because it's preseason. That's just me.

As a LU grad that was in school during the 'glory days' a few years back when Larry Blair, David Dees, Gabe Martin, etc. were reaking havoc on the Big South, take comfort in knowing you guys aren't the first to go through this battle. I clearly remember a game a few years back against VMI, when the 'West Point rejects' cheer came out, and a girl behind me almost started crying. She started talking about how as LU students we needed to be above reproach and how a chant like that just hurt our witness. It honestly all but ruined the game for me, just knowing that someone in our student body actually took a chant like that to be that serious. I honestly think a good portion of the student body every year shows up in Lynchburg after spending the first 17 or 18 years of their lives under a rock some where. Yelling shut up or sit down loser or something like that in the spirit of competition is fine. If we can't be passionate about our school than what on earth would make anyone else want to come to school there? Heaven forbid the majority of LU's students ever have the misfortune of finding themselves at a major D-I school where basically anything goes. I mean I remember Duke going up to Maryland a few years ago and students chanting F-you J.J., and sexual things about his sister. If that ever happened at a Liberty game, home or away...well let's just say most of our sheltered student body would probably need medical attention and long-term counseling. I remember the ENTIRE student section chanting 'we're not purple' at High Point before the Big South championship game in 04.' I also remember chanting 'Pete's a whiner," at former Coastal coach Pete Strickland.
Now, busting on an opponent's uniform color or calling a coach a whiner might cost you your salvation, or at least your membership card in the 'above reproach club.'

I did drop a "Get off your knees" once, then remembered where I was, and didn't say it anymore. I stuck with my Foot Locker references.

I dropped it to an umpire at an LC game. Would NEVER do that at an LU game.

It slipped. Luckily it wasn't loud and only the two people next to me heard it.

See, it's conversations like this that make me really want to come back and attend LU athletic events and also stay miles away at the same time. To me, everything short of direct physical contact is fair game. The home crowd advantage is supposed to be just that and when you undermine the crowd's ability to affect the game, you're undermining your team. College athletics were never intended to be simply for the gratification of the spectators. They were first designed and implemented as rallying points for the entire student body, faculty, alumni and general community. College sports are not about golf-clapping and the occasional muttered appreciation. College sports are a full-body heave of emotion and school spirit and that's the way it's supposed to be. "Toning it down" in the name of God or testimony doesn't impress anyone; it makes you a running joke to the rest of the world. The real testimony is being willing and able to beat the other guy's brains in during the game but willing to help him up off the floor at the end and the crowd is as much a part of that as the player.
Further, where does it stop? If you're willing to compromise your "testimony" of your team in the name of social nicety then it's not a big step more to compromise your testimony of God for the same thing.

ok first let's leave the morality comments about ron godwin out. not necessary at all. i think "suck" probably should not be said due to it's sexual nature, though i say it when im not at LU. the other stuff i think is NBD. it is part of a game atmosphere. it is a slippery slope because we are LU though. as far as respecting police, if they say it, obey it. if it ever happens again, see if JB or KK will go over and speak with the police about it, and try to hammer it out then. i would hate to see some over zealous cop arrest someone over words. police are an authority....so we all need to respect them. JB runs the athletic dept and makes the rules. i think that we would override carson anyday...godwin?? who knows...i feel like as part of the executive staff they can collaborate and come up with something. SJ..stay vigilant and make sure you get clarification on this stuff. kudos to you for recognizing what you did and making amends. that shows true character.

So you're cool with students representing LU talking vulgar about someone's sister? ok.

It doesn't bother me. Maybe it should, but it doesn't.

Feel free to question my salvation.
