thats when the uniforms were brand new too- we had only Liberty UNIVERSITY for a couple years and the logo was still fresh.

ya gotta admit- its a CLASSIC college FB color scheme- not contrived like the NFL-Europe style gear everyone is wearing these days.

Since HarrisburgFlame has talked up his alter ego Morgan Hout so much, I figured it was time he had his mug up on our new board:

My dad always used to point out to me that Morgan went to school at his alma mater, Tennessee Temple. A school it should be noted that has never had a football program.

Yes, "The Storm" is still here in Lynchburg, playing right next to City Stadium's Calvin Falwell Field, home of the Lynchburg Hillcats. The football stadium still looks the same, but for those who haven't seen the Baseball stadium since it was redone two/three years ago, all I can say is it looks great now.

1988? I thought they fired Hout after the 86 season. I always thought he was there from 84-86. I know he was there during the Flood. The thing I remember is my Senior Year Fall of 1986 he was named Coach of the year and then it seemed a short time later Liberty fired him for Sam. Hout had came in and replaced Dowling who was on the same level as Karcher and had done a great job and then got the AX. Hout was a great Coach and all he got was a whole lot of nothing. This was the begining of the down fall in Liberty Football and it has never returned. Does anyone know where Hout is today?

Coach Sam was hired in December of 88... While Morgan was on vacation with his family at Disney World celebrating an 8-3 year. In fairness though, he had gone 5-6, 3-4-1, 1-9 and 3-7 his first four years and I'm guessing they were in talks with Coach Sam beforehand... Morgan just didn't cooperate by having a bad final year

And Coach Sam didn't have a bad run... he had a winning record and cracked the Top 20 throughout his time as coach. We just couldn't quite get over the playoff hump. (Although pretty darn close in '97.) I sure miss him though... the best quotes ever!

So where is Hout today? Thanks for the updates. I did not know Coach Sam did that well. Everytime I checked on what was happening in Football at LU they were getting their tails beat. Now with the Super Information Highway I can keep closer track and no what is going on.

The whole deal with Hout bothers me. The way Liberty handles these kind of things is not always the best way of handling personel change. He really was a great Guy and stepped in and worked hard to rebuild Liberty Football from the mess Dowling left. I have to believe that some of the success Sam had in the begining was because of the years of recruiting and hard work Hout did. If anyone knows where Hout is today let me know I'm interested to know.

Last I heard about a year or so ago he was coaching a high school down in the Miami area.

morgan is at highlands christian academy in pompano beach, fla. His team finished 4-5 this year. he also teaches bible and weight training at the school of 238 students in the high school and 856 overall. his wife also teaches there too.

All that Hout did at LU was make his team better every year while upgrading the schedule at the same time. No one has done that since with better budgets and facilities to boot. And, he did not thumb his nose at what the school stood for like his replacement routinely did.

I'll assume Belcher Boy was not around the program when Hout was in charge. Maybe not even born yet thus his confusion. That's okay, that's why I'm here. Boy is confused with comparing records with the strength of a our program. As they say the rest of the story shows that as Hout's teams improved year by year, they also upgraded the schedule to challenge the team to improve to the next level. Hout did this with little budget and facilities that were washed down the James River. They overcame those obstacles to the point where they could compete with any 1-AA program in the country and even beat a team ranked in the top 25 1-A strictly with Hout's recruits. For a frame of reference, last year's squad struggled to beat a bad DII program for our only win while Hout's teams competed successfully against teams like Youngstown St, JMU, etc. Right now we are left to celebrate our only victory over good ole Concord, but teams that like Youngstown St can spend this off season talking about their nat'l championships won after they lost to Hout's team. Their program continued to improved, while LU's went stagnant under Sam, then nosedived under Karcher.

Let's hope the current coach can have similar success in taking our program to the next level because, sorry to say, we haven't seen any upgrade since the days of Hout.

Simply put,
Hout took us a from a down and out DII program and made us a very competitive DIAA program.
Sam was brought in to take a very good DIAA program and make it competitive at the DIA level. He failed (the goal was Sam's words to the players during his 1st hall meeting in the football dorm after being hired, I was there)
Karcher - enough said.

Keep in mind, as our current coach begins to add teams like Wake Forest, Rutgers etc. We are going to have to take our losses early on. We might end up with some poor records like during Hout's early years, but each year we play that caliber a schedule, hopefully we become more competitive with those guys and then add more teams at that level to get to the point where play an entirly DIA schedule. The record will not look pretty along the way but the upgrade in our program will be exciting to watch.

Hout took us to the next level, let's hope Rocco can do the same.
