Another interesting discussion for me to step into this afternoon.

Personally I kind of like the tribute for this first game. It shows a level of respect to a man who certainly deserves it while having some fun with his persona (something he obviously appreciated).

I don't think anyone will be dissed for being decked out in red against TC ... but I also think it could be quite a visual with a bunch of folks dressed alike.

You just made my point for me. We did so well last year finally getting everyone dressed alike. The freshman have been shown and told that red is our color at games. We've got a exponentially better chance of getting everyone in red as opposed to white shirts and red ties.

I'm ok with a few select students doing this (like the Society of Windsor does every week). I just don't like it being promoted as an official thing for a game.

i guess there's really no point in talking about it since the decision has been made.
that administration really needs to push the entire student body, not just SFC, to wear red to games. that is the only way it will become unified.

This may seem odd, but I have to agree with Jon on this issue. I am in the Society and wear the white shirt and red tie to every game, but I think this could have been done in a better way. My idea: cheap red t-shirts that say "JERRY" on them or something. Maybe even play off "Champion" or something. A cheap red t-shirt with something Liberty-esque would have been a great way to memorialize Dr. Falwell and create quite the atmosphere for the first home game. The plus side to this - students and fans who attend have a shirt they can wear for the rest of the season. Plus, what a cool souveneer to take home. Maybe we can do something like this for Homecoming. I'm sure at 12000 shirts a local company would be more than happy to give us a good deal.

We in the Society like to stand out, so we like being the only ones dressed up for games, and although we certainly don't mind honoring Dr. Falwell in this way, I'd much rather see the red-out.

::::Also, they should get the red pom-poms too...can you imagine how sick that would look?

I think this is a great tribute for ONE game. You can't just ignore the passing of our Founder at the first game after his death. This is a great idea. It's just Tusculum, and the red will reemerge after that. Besides I'm running camera for that game and it will give me something else interesting to shoot for color.

The t-shirts would probably be a little too expensive so I can see why they didn't do that, but I can agree on everything else. A halftime tribute would be perfect. The marching band won't have their entire show ready by then, so there will be plenty of time. Shoot, a nice pre-game ceremony would be great. It'd get the fans in there early and we could have as much time as we wanted.

Quite frankly, I haven't talked to a single person, except for the alum on this board, who like this idea. I mentioned it to people tonight at practice and they all said they didn't really like it, I've mentioned it to students and they didn't like it.

I'll be the first person to say we need to do something to honor Jerry. Please don't think I'm saying that we shouldn't. I just don't think this is a good way. A painted t-shirt? C'mon, we're better than that. If we want to be a big time program, we have to act like it.

at 12000 shirts, you could get them done for less than $2 a shirt. I know that's alot (24K) , but for one game, it would be incredible....

plus, spread out over 6 home games, because fans will continue to wear it, it comes out to about $4000 a game - not bad.

big time program needs big time promotions - this would be big.

I'm sure they could get a donation to cover the costs if it was to honor Jerry. they get donations for everything else

You'd have to get a sponsor for that and it's just hard. Believe me, it's one of my favorite ideas, and I've talked to Kevin Keys about it plenty of times. If the money/sponsor was there, I'm sure it'd be done.

Now, if you were to get a deal like that, it could've been possible to sell the shirts at the game (or raise single game prices by the cost of the shirt), and had it done that way (that's how Penn St does it), but still, it would've been very hard to pull off.

The stadium in all-red is something Jerry would've loved to see. I don't see why it can't be a "Wear red for Jerry" or something. Shoot, have all the students wear red shirts and put a black arm band on. They could either tape the arm band, use a sweat band, or since they're promoting painting shirts (what?), have them paint a black arm band. Red shirts with everyone having an arm band on their left arm would a) be twice as easy to pull off and get more people involved and b) look twice as good.

Why I think its a good idea: many of the reasons already listed by others. I think its a very creative way of honoring Dr. Falwell, at a sporting event - crazy, sloppy, or otherwise. Its something that is VERY uniqu to our university's culture and heritage. Yes, ties date back to earlier days at LU. The red tie symbolizes Dr. Falwell - he was KNOWN for it. Bringing all of that together, for ONE football game is an excellent idea!

And because I think its creative, I recognize SJ's concern for disrupting the trend of wearing red, but I don't think it would damage that. If this is announced at a convo or something, its different than just "hey, wear red." Dr. Falwell's passing is on everyone's mind as they return to campus, especially the first Wednesday convo. With that on everyone's mind, here is a fun way to pay tribute. But, in its uniqueness (word?), it catches the attention of everyone, even many females and non-sports fan males, who are the primary culprits of the same pink, lime green, and light blue colors that were mentioned. After that, I think it helps the "wear red" push, because for week 2, everyone is expecting to be unified in what we wear to a game. So, I think in a way, this could actually help your side of the argument, Jon.

Okay, so a muddled compromise: :brightidea

Be a Jerry mirror...where red t-shirts with graphic white ties.

Or a reversible t-shirt with white and a graphic iron on red tie on one side and a red shirt with a Liberty graphic on the other.

Seriously, though, whatever happens it will be nice to sea the Red Sea Nation take over for subsequent games.

(By the way, on an unrelated note, SJ, if you guys ever get red LUnatic shirts made up, you gotta get some of the players to wear that under their gear so when they take off the pads and come over to the student section to sing the fight song they're showing their fan-support/appreciation....Flamefans would be funny and a great photo with the crowd and players but due to the fact that the board had donated to the Flames Club, not sure of any possible NCAA infractions in that.)

The players keep their pads on when coming to sing the fight song. There wouldn't be a way of seeing it.

With that being said, I am planning on special homecoming t-shirts.

I'm a big fan of the plan, actually. Speaking of which, convo tomorrow morning will be a tough one--will be a memorial to Dr. Falwell as well as a chance for Jerry Jr. to lead convo for the first time.

Our hall is going for the white shirt/red tie bit in respect. I'm sure we won't be the only ones.

I still say that any group can wear what they want. It's not going to hurt the "red Sea" idea in the long run. If you don't want to wear it then don't. I fo one will be wearing RED!

At what point does a tribute become "overkill?" We have kids doing white shirt/red tie tributes to convo probably everytime between now and the game. When does it get to be too much.
