I just don't like it. That's my opinion. I don't think shirts and ties are for football games. Yea, let's honor Jerry by looking like complete slobs in wrinkled up unbuttoned shirts. Yay. I'm sorry, I hate it.
Edit (I was awake for maybe a minute when I originally posted, I'm expanding now):
Ok, here's the deal for me. I'm all for honoring Jerry. I have no problem with that. I just think this is a very bad way to do it. Our athletic department has been working so hard to get everyone to wear red. At the end of the year last year, it finally started catching on. We started seeing less and less green, light blue, and pink Liberty shirts and more red. Even the general admission side started wearing red. Now, with all of this momentum going into the first game, and such a great opportunity to get even more of the stadium in red, we change it up and tell them to wear white. We don't have the tradition that other schools do where we can change it up for a game and go right back to wearing our normal colors the next week and still have everyone do it. We're still trying to change the atmosphere in our stadiums. All of the work that the athletic department did last year trying to get everyone to wear red is going down the drain on this game. I understand t-shirt giveaways and "Paint it ____" theme days. That's fine. You don't do those on the first game of the season and you give things away at those games. Those are great. Telling everyone to wear red for well over a year, marketing that, and then saying, "Wait, wear white this time" is completely counterproductive. Our marketing staff is better than that. This idea came from kids who already where white button up shirts and ties to games. If they want to do that, fine, but to tell all of the students to do this is completely against what we've been trying to get them to do for the past year. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but I think this is completely 100% stupid. That's how I feel about it. I understand some people like the idea, and that's fine, but to me, we're still a baby in terms of stadium atmosphere and crowd participation. We started growing up a little last year, getting more people to wear the school colors, getting more people to be involved, etc. It's like at the end of the year last year we were potty trained, and now we just crapped our pants on this one.
