from SFC email from Bob Good
Heads-up now for the first Football game on September 1st---We will be honoring our founder and former Chancellor, Dr. Jerry Falwell, by wearing white shirts and red ties to the game instead of our SFC t-shirts. Wear a real white shirt and red tie, or just make one with a t-shirt and some red paint---be creative, but let's all honor Dr. Falwell together at this event. We will have some red paint at the SFC Tent on game-day!

I think this is dumb.

Wear red. Wear red. Wear red. Wear red. Wear red. Wear red. Wear white. What?

That's one of the reasons I realized the toga thing was stupid. Most of them would be white. Our stands look great when we all wear red.

you're right Jon...the stands do look great in all red...but I don't think this is a dumb idea at all...its one game...I think its a pretty good idea

Sounds like we are dressing like Ole Miss students, but I'm okay with that. Now if I could only find my penny loafers to go with my Khakis. :P

This would be a lot more fun if there were black jackets/suits with the white shirts and red ties.

I doubt too many students own black suits, but there is always Goodwill and Salvation Army.

I just don't like it. That's my opinion. I don't think shirts and ties are for football games. Yea, let's honor Jerry by looking like complete slobs in wrinkled up unbuttoned shirts. Yay. I'm sorry, I hate it.

Edit (I was awake for maybe a minute when I originally posted, I'm expanding now):

Ok, here's the deal for me. I'm all for honoring Jerry. I have no problem with that. I just think this is a very bad way to do it. Our athletic department has been working so hard to get everyone to wear red. At the end of the year last year, it finally started catching on. We started seeing less and less green, light blue, and pink Liberty shirts and more red. Even the general admission side started wearing red. Now, with all of this momentum going into the first game, and such a great opportunity to get even more of the stadium in red, we change it up and tell them to wear white. We don't have the tradition that other schools do where we can change it up for a game and go right back to wearing our normal colors the next week and still have everyone do it. We're still trying to change the atmosphere in our stadiums. All of the work that the athletic department did last year trying to get everyone to wear red is going down the drain on this game. I understand t-shirt giveaways and "Paint it ____" theme days. That's fine. You don't do those on the first game of the season and you give things away at those games. Those are great. Telling everyone to wear red for well over a year, marketing that, and then saying, "Wait, wear white this time" is completely counterproductive. Our marketing staff is better than that. This idea came from kids who already where white button up shirts and ties to games. If they want to do that, fine, but to tell all of the students to do this is completely against what we've been trying to get them to do for the past year. I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but I think this is completely 100% stupid. That's how I feel about it. I understand some people like the idea, and that's fine, but to me, we're still a baby in terms of stadium atmosphere and crowd participation. We started growing up a little last year, getting more people to wear the school colors, getting more people to be involved, etc. It's like at the end of the year last year we were potty trained, and now we just crapped our pants on this one.

I LOVE the idea. One game to honor our past chancellor. Back to the red shirts for Week 2. I'm sure that some guys who do have access to black suits will go all-out. I think they should do a Falwell look-alike contest, but that may be a bit too far.

For those of you that are currently students, this may seem trivial. For the majority of the existence of Liberty, ties were commonplace, not only on Jerry, but the entire male student body. I'm sure you have heard all the stories. If this were about setting precedent for all future football games, then go ahead and argue vehemently. However, this is for a single game. Wear the tie, be happy, be unified and enjoy the game. It will only be seen as a tribute if large numbers of students participate.

Personally, I swore off ties a number of years ago and cleared my closet of the repulsive materials. I wore a lifetime's worth of ties at LU (OK, most of the time the tie was draped in my back pocket). My wife was cleaning out the storage unit a few weeks ago and found a few of my old college ties. I would have happily donated them for the game, but I believe they are at the local shelter or Goodwill.

I understand where you're coming from SJ...and I love the all red just a much as you do..

I just think that this is a good thing to do the first game...its not going to kill anything...its going to show the student body how important Jerry Falwell was to this college and to the athletic department. That myh opinion...

Like I said I do know where you are coming from, and understand...but I don't think its going to look sloppy or anything...we shall see

ps...my classes are easy as crap too...if I don't get at least a 3.5 this semester there is something wrong

See, that's the thing. That's the common ground I have been able to find on this issue:

The kids who wore ties to class, didn't mind it, etc agree with this idea.

The ones who didn't wear ties to class or absolutely hated having to wear ties to class hate this idea.

To the people who think this is a good idea (Scorcho, JK, LUconn, Posty, etc), why do you think it's a good idea? I posted my reasons for thinking it's a bad idea. I'd honestly like to hear reasons as to why this is a good idea. I may disagree with them, but, in my head, I can't think of a single reason as to why this is a good thing to do. I'm saying this with all sincerity, not being sarcastic or anything. I'd love to know why you think it's a good idea.

I think its a good idea because I think it is a good way to show Jerry we remember him and realize as a student body how much football and the athletic program meant to him...he loved to see student have fun with things and he loved having fun with us...and i think its a way students can have fun at a football game and still be remembering Jerry Falwell...

that is my reasoning behind liking the idea

i don't think the idea is THAT bad. it won't be a big step back, people will still wear red to games. it could actually help the "red sea" idea, if students see how cool it looks with everyone wearing one color (assuming a lot of participation), then maybe they'll realize they need to unify with the rest of the student body and wear red to games. i don't know, we'll see what happens. i think in the future we just need to advocate wearing red, and hopefully people will do it.

ps. the administration didn't work that hard to get everyone to wear red. what did they do besides red SFC shirts? I never heard them mention to wear red in convo before. to be unified they are going to have to spread the word beyond the SFC, no matter what it is they're trying to do

I can understand that reasoning. However, I question it.

Jerry always told us that when we do things, look our best, etc. I may be grabbing at straws here (very possibly), but untucked shirts or painted on shirts aren't something that Jerry would particularly like.

In my opinion, and some people know I've been talking about this all summer, a more fitting "tribute," and something that could become an every game tradition, would be a "Jer-ry Jer-ry" chant between the third and fourth quarters. Jerry always said to finish the job, finish strong, etc. There's no better time to stress that than going into the fourth quarter.

Now, before anyone accuses me of this, don't think that I don't like this idea simply because I think my idea is better. Even if I didn't have an idea, I'd hate this one. If this were for a pep rally or something, great, but not for a game. I'd even participate if it was for a pep rally. However, we wear red to games. Liberty fans wear red. If you're going to dress up, you better do it right, and by that I mean slacks, tucked in shirt, tie on right, etc. Looking like a slob with the shirt unbuttoned, tie not all of the way up, etc is not a tribute at all.

I understand where Jon is coming from, but I think it's a good idea. One game is not going to make everyone forget that they are supposed to wear red. Yes, some people may not know, but we will get them back on track for week 2. This is just something simple we can do as a student body to say thank you to Jerry for letting us get to where we are now.

But is this the best way? It seems like this was just something thrown together on the fly. Isn't there a better way, something, anything, than having people wear ties to game? I absolutely HATE the southern idea of dressing up to football games.

I wouldn't say that Jerry wouldn't like this idea. when we played bball in schilling he would tie his tie around his head and act crazy... he always wanted to have fun and be crazy, especially at sporting events. I think he would like this idea
