Liberty University wide receiver Dominic Bolden has been named this week’s Big South Special Teams Player of the Week, honoring his return efforts against Coastal Carolina this past weekend.

Bolden (So., WR, Orlando, Fla.) returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter in the Flames’ conference battle against the 22nd-ranked Chanticleers.

It marked the first time in two years that a Liberty player has returned a kickoff for a touchdown and the fourth time in league history. The last time that a Flame returned a kickoff for a score was on October 23, 2004, when Sam Gado returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown on the same field against Coastal Carolina.

Bolden is the third Liberty player this year to be named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week as Wynton Jackson garnered the honor after the St. Paul’s game and Ben Beasley was named the league’s top special teams player after the Flames’ game at Towson.

Bolden and the Flames take a week off from Big South Conference action this weekend as they host Western Carolina on Saturday at William Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest.

Dominic has perhaps some of the highest upside of any player on the squad. If he keeps progressing by the time he's a senior he's going to be unstoppable. But he's got to hang on to those big opportunities when they come his way.

Congrats to Dom on the honor.

Bolden Named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week For Second Time
November 20, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.

For the second time this year, Liberty University wide receiver/return specialist Dominic Bolden has been named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week, honoring his record-setting performance at VMI this past weekend.

Bolden (So., WR, Orlando, Fla.) became the first player in Big South Conference history to return a second kickoff for a touchdown in a season as he tied a school and conference record by returning a kickoff 97 yards for a score against the Keydets in the Flames’ season-finale victory. Earlier this year, Bolden returned a kickoff 93 yards against Coastal Carolina.

Bolden is one of three players nationally to have returned two kickoffs for a touchdown this year as he joins Alabama A&M’s Ulysses Banks and Tennessee-Martin’s Jessie Burtojn in accomplishing the feat.

Liberty finished the regular season ranked third nationally in kickoff return yardage as the Flames set a new Big South Conference record by averaging 25.56 yards per kickoff return. Also, Liberty was the only team in the nation to return three kickoffs for a touchdown this year as Wynton Jackson also returned one 80 yards against Charleston Southern.

The Flames owned the Big South Special Teams Player of the Week award this year as Bolden was also honored on October 30, Jackson took home the award twice (September 2 and November 11) and Ben Beasley was named the league’s top weekly special teams player once (September 16).

The Flames finished their season on Saturday with a 38-32 win over VMI, ending the year on a three-game winning streak. Liberty finished its first season under head coach Danny Rocco with a 6-5 record which tied for the nation’s best win improvement.

Liberty, who finished the 2005 campaign with a 1-10, was one of four teams to finish this year with a five-win improvement over the previous as they joined Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Bucknell and Robert Morris in accomplishing the turnabout.
