That's one of the reasons Apple took the route they did regarding backgrounding, which they've caught a lot of flack for. I get the criticism, but I like the way my battery life doesn't suck and everything always runs smoothly. Just two different approaches and the one Apple took means no one will ever pick up an iPhone display model in a store and wonder why it's running so slowly. I'm not saying it's the right approach, but after my experiences with background apps and memory management on Windows Mobile, I'm not complaining either.
