As Maurice Jones-Drew’s holdout reached its 33rd day, Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey said for the first time Monday that Rashad Jennings will open the regular season as the starting running back.
“Again, Rashad Jennings is going in as the starter. I don’t know how that came out being any different,” Mularkey said.

Meanwhile, Mularkey seems to have a lot of confidence in Jennings, who has carried 36 times in the preseason for 176 yards, an average of 4.9 yards a carry. His longest run was 17 yards. Jennings spent last year on the injured reserve list after suffering a knee injury in the third preseason game.
“I think he can be a really good football player. A really good back. From what I’ve seen on tape before I got here and what I’ve seen in person, I’d say we’ll be OK,” Mularkey said.
He said Jennings has vision and is “faster than you think.”
Mularkey said Jennings has a knack of getting yards after first contact.
“There’s a couple of plays I saw four or five yards that were made after he was hit, so that is a positive. That’s in the box or outside the box. He’s a physical runner,” Mularkey said.
Jennings started his college career at Pittsburgh but transferred to Liberty after his freshman year to be closer to home because his father was ill. Jennings rushed for 4,044 yards in his college career.

Mike Mularkey said Rashad Jennings will start at running back on Sunday against Minnesota but Maurice Jones-Drew should also play.
When asked what his pitch would be to a young recruit about his alma mater, he replied "Liberty is diverse, it has a solid foundation, great education, and it helps you grow in more aspects than just football...And...because I went there (laughing)."
