Except he didn't agree with them at all. Hume said they were all promoting pacifism in this case, but their words were not words of pacifism...

Huckabee: "Be prepared, first, to put your sights on the American vessel. And then be prepared that the next thing you see will be the gates of Hell, because that is exactly what you will see after that."

Thompson: "I think one more step and they would have been introduced to those virgins that they're looking forward to seeing."

It might have been a funny moment for some folks, but Paul made his point. They were only one step away from being close enough for Thompson and Huckabee to engage in an act of war.

I don't think the speedboat incident was small. In fact, I think they were probing SOP's and tactics. However, I certainly don't think it was as provocative as some are making it out to be. I'd consider <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/a ... >something like this</a> a much more serious offense, and yet, most Americans don't even know it happened.

All of the candidates, including Huckabee and Thompson, supported the actions of the captain of the Navy vessel. Paul totally exagerated their responses to make it sound like they were one step away from invading Iran if they had got any closer. Paul either did not understand the question, wasn't listening to the responses of the other candidates or just wanted to make a wider point on our dealings with Iran.

If you don't think that the captain of that ship would have been justified in taking action to defend his vessel, you must not remember the USS Cole incident.

My best guess is that Paul wanted to use the question to separate himself from the others on his view of our dealings with Iran and Hume called him out on it.

I didn't say anything about what they would have been justified in doing. If they had been attacked and Navy SOP's and RoE's allowed them to engage, it would still have been a tough call on whether or not to return fire or just take evasive maneuvers. I, personally, would think they'd be justified in defending military lives and equipment, but in International waters the political case for that is tough. I think the Navy did a great job and probably learned as much about Iran's intentions as they learned about our response tactics.

Of course, whether we should have ships anywhere near Iran comes is the deeper issue, which is where Paul's tirade stemmed from. And I already know what everyone else thinks here, so I don't need to keep talking about it. I just wanted to get what I thought about what the Navy would have been justified in doing to be on the record.
