I am now starting to questioning IM. Before you start the "look at the games he's scheduled" stuff just remember EVERY FBS school is vying for 6 D1 wins a year so why wouldn't any team want to schedule us and pick up an all most certain win and in many cases some cash.
I'm probably wrong but I thought Money and Lawyers got us to FBS independent status not IM.
Can someone give me a rundown on what IM has done at LU thus far so I can see where i'm wrong. Has he raised a bunch of money for LU that i'm not aware of.
Could it be he is here to shed the past and get a more high profile job in the very near future and didn't want to have the baggage of being the AD that replaced a "legend" at LU with a coach that only won 6 games in his first couple of years.
I would think it would be easier to seek employment and explain why his current and inherited coach is struggling during a transition phase than explaining why HIS hand picked coach is struggling.
The only way I can accept this is if TG was given a lifetime contract. Based on what I got out of the article he will always meet IM's requirements because Unless something mental happens TG is not gonna change his religious status, He won't be a bad ambassador for LU, Will always have young players on the team.
We play UVA an VT several times over the next few years and if we happen to lose each meeting as long as we lose by less each time that's improvement so why would TG ever need to be replaced at LU.
Understand your frustration completely. A couple of things to consider. IM inherited TG who had been given a ridiculous contract extension, (think Dale Layer and Toman), along with his assistants, by the previous AD. In addition, there is an early signing period now in Dec. that did not exist prior to this year.
The combination of the two, plus having to fill out a FBS sized roster, made it difficult to bring in a new coach right now. With two weeks to go, prior to the early signing period, it would not have given the new coach enough time to visit and hold on to the committed recruits. Plus he would have had to try and put his own staff together for the next signing period in Feb.
Personally, I would have taken the hit and fired him anyway. But, I have to consider that I don't have access to all of the information that the decision-makers have. In addition, the admin has a pretty stellar record of making the correct decisions in cases like this. Maybe not as timely as we would like, but overall they have done quite well.
I am confident, that without some significant improvement next year, we will have a new coach soon enough. TG hardly received a huge vote of confidence or support from IM and didn't receive a one-year contract extension, which is pretty standard now days, if the admin is happy with the results of the previous year.
We should be glad that the AD and admin hold integrity as a high priority. However, I am convinced that they also understand there has to be performance on the field. I believe this is the last contract problem that we will have to overcome, (maybe one more), before the mistakes of our previous AD, are flushed out.
After that, I don't see any room for excuses for accepting anything less than stellar results, in all sports.
My .02 cents.
