Conventional wisdom said the same thing about Black college basketball players being athletic and not smart enough to win the national championship. Then came Texas Western in 64.
Excellent point, Scar, but the year was actually 1966. I realize you weren't even born yet, and only Fumble & I were around (in kindergarten). And El Paso is my wife's hometown, where we were married.

From Wikipedia:
Texas Western College, became the first college in a Southern state to integrate its intercollegiate athletic teams. Although the campus population was less than 1% African-American, in 1966, basketball coach Don Haskins and his Texas Western team thrilled portions of the nation by winning the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship with an all-black starting lineup, thus breaking an unspoken barrier and transforming the history of college basketball.
