Because he had just two hits in 24 at-bats with Worcester of the Can-Am League last summer, Phil Laurent has earned a spot in the San Diego Padres’ organization.
While the above doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, it was last year’s failure that led to success this summer for Laurent, a 2002 Calvary Academy graduate who signed a free agent contract Wednesday with San Diego.
“The whole time scale ended up being best for me,” said Laurent, a member of the River City Rascals who was fourth in the independent Frontier League with a .341 batting average, 12 home runs and 46 runs batted in this summer.
As a senior at Liberty University in 2006, the left-handed-hitting Laurent batted .377 and led the Flames with 10 home runs, 73 RBIs and a school-record 27 doubles. Laurent finished as the Flames’ career leader with 280 hits and 68 doubles, and he’s No. 3 on the school’s all-time RBI list with 181.
