It's interesting to note that many of the new MLS soccer-specific stadiums (also designed to host Lacrosse, Field Hockey and Outdoor concerts) are being paired with "Town Center" or Outdoor Malls like this to encourage a mixed use development. This way people can come down to a nice restaurant to eat, browse some shops, take in a movie, then go to the game or a concert and grab a snack afterwards.

Almost like an entertainment mecca for you to spend all that 9-5 dinero.

Campbell Co., VA - The public will be allowed to comment Monday about a new mall proposed for the Lynchburg area. Now we know a bit more about what Crossroads Colonnade may look like. Question is -- Does the Lynchburg area need another mall?

River Ridge has nearly 800,000 sf so it's a good sized mall. It needs to be updated and perhaps repositioned to some extent. It would take in the neighborhood of over $40,000,000 to buy it so that's many $$$$$'s.

Seriously compared with The Plaza, River Ridge is golden. It just needs $10,000,000 in pizzazz--especially in the anchors.

Overall though with all the proposed projects assumed built Lynchburg could be seriously over-retailed. Also putting Wal_mart in the 24503 completely misses the demographic mark. That site should be made something like Barracks in C'Ville. Instead of Teeter's you put in Trader Joes.

Anything is better than The Plaza. I don't understand why it's still there either.

I think people living in 24503 would love to imagine that Wal-Mart misses the mark for them, but I don't think it's the case. The rich people I know didn't get that way by spending too much on groceries. Boonsboro or not, it's still the Lynchburg area. There's money out there, but the social status is still pretty low in the grand scheme of things.

I'm not sure enough people in this town could even pronounce enough items at Trader Joe's for them to come here. I have a good friend who's working for them in D.C. and I'm not entirely sure I'd want them here anyway after hearing his stories. They pay high salaries with big benefits but you can forget about family time, vacation or a life outside of work. 80-100 hour work weeks are all too common. At a frackin' grocery store.

that proposed wal-mart on old forest road is in the 24501 and is easily accessible for the demographic wal-mart reaches. so techincally it is on the edge of the 03 away from boonsboro. btw, you will see a ukrops or martins in lynchburg before a trader joes.

RUSTBURG - Numerous concerns about traffic and road plans prompted Campbell County planning commissioners to table a rezoning request for a 202-acre mixed-use development near Liberty University.

"We don't want to delay this any more than we have to," chairman Patrick Tweedy said to the group of about 50 citizens. "I feel this is a good project, but we want to listen to your concerns."

The issue will be brought up at the next planning commission meeting Aug. 27 at 7 p.m.

"We're just not ready to approve a motion on this thing," commissioner Doris Rode said.

LU is getting strong-armed by the folks from Rustburg? Some of those folks have never been out of Campbell County in their lives. To give them a Richmond-quality shopping experience is more than some of those folks can comprehend.

I don't know about strong-armed. It says "more than 5 people" voiced their opinions. What does that mean? Was it 6 or was it 5000? But anyway, obviously something would need to be done with the roads, but whatever it is, it'd be worth it.

I do go to W-M for some things but I don't find the drive over to Wards Rd. very difficult. Close enough. I'd rather see a Target or a nicely done food anchored center similar to the Boonsboro Center but without the horrible Food Lion. Teeters would work if Trader Joes is too esoteric. Why is Teeters not in town anyway?

They used to be in town, but they didn't do as well as Kroger and Food Lion. If I remember correctly, Kroger swapped some stores in N.C. for the several Harris Teeters in this area. The Krogers at Waterlick and Boonsboro were formerly Harris Teeters, as was the Northern Tool on Wards Road. Since Kroger already had a store on Wards they just took over the Harris Teeter next to Kmart and then sold it.

flameinforest is correct. kroger and HT did a store swap and HT moved out of the lynchburg market. they had been in roanoke and lynchburg and pulled out of roanoke first. kroger wanted the market share and offered a good deal. they are in charlottesville, some parts of northern va. and the virginia beach area, and in SC, GA and TN as well. but the charlotte based company is obviously heavy in north carolina

I've never shopped in a Harris Teeter and I've only been in a Kroger like 2-3 times. It's always Food Lion or Lowe's for me.

Lowe's Food. Completely different from Lowe's Hardware. They used to be run out of Wilkesboro, NC but after NASCAR left the speedway and a lot of the money in the town left, they packed up and headed to the Lake Norman area.

The small print jumped out at me...

The land will be sold to the development arm of a major insurance company, Falwell said. The company has recently built more than 20 million square feet of retail space nationwide, he said.
