We all know that this is the motto for the season this year. Up until last week, I had just heard the phrase "Good to Great." On Sunday night, Coach Rocco spoke to the students at his camp and explained the five ways to go from Good to Great. Since then, this has been stuck in my head. I realize that some of the points can't be applied to us fully because, well, we don't play football, but the logic behind them can be implied to our lives, etc.

1) Physical dominance. He wants us to be the biggest, most conditioned team, period. Since most of us don't play football, I take this and relate it to being in shape and treating our bodies the way they're supposed to. I'm one that will admit that I don't do a great job of this at all. It's step one in going from good to great.

2) Football IQ. He wants our players to be smart and know football. He wants them to play smart and make the right decisions on the field. Quite frankly, I haven't tried to relate this one to me personally yet.

3) Academic Success. He wants our players to do good in the classroom. He knows that some people are better students than others, but wants everyone to do the best the possibly can and if they're having trouble, seek out help to make them better. I can take this literally because I'm still in school, but I figure I can also take this and relate it to my job as well.

4) Social Maturity. Don't make bad decisions. Do the right things. This one's pretty self-explanatory for all of it.

5) Spiritual Development. Once again, pretty self-explanatory for most of us.

It's a great motto for our football team. It's a great motto for our entire school, and for all of us in general.

It's been stuck in my head, I just thought I'd get it stuck in some of yours.

I designed a poster that I gave to the football department in case they wanted to hang it around the building, but I fully plan on printing it out on poster paper and hanging it either in my den or my room. It's huge (11" x 17") but you can print it on ledger paper if you really want it.

Is he asking the players to read the book? That would be a good idea considering it's a GREAT book. I have it on MP3 for anyone who is reading challenged like myself.

Good to Great by Jim Collins.

I would very much recommend it. It's an easy read too.

It is a good book to apply if you can get through the rather research laden approach.

And if you are in the ministry, the companion non-profit addendum is outstanding as well.

Jim Collins has quickly become a guru in the business world thanks to this book.
