CSU's Smith hires agent, definitely in NBA Draft

Jason Smith is remaining in the NBA Draft pool and hired an agent today to represent him, erasing any chance the 7-foot, 260-pound forward would return to Colorado State University for his senior season.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my years at Colorado State,” Smith said in a statement released by the school shortly before noon, about 3 hours before the deadline for underclassmen to withdraw from the draft and remain eligible under NCAA rules. “I had a great relationship with (former CSU coach) Dale Layer and his staff. I also enjoyed my time with (new) coach Tim Miles over the last few months. While the future of CSU Rams basketball is in great shape, I have spent the past three weeks working out and visiting with various NBA teams. Based on the feedback and response I have received, the opportunity in front of me is one I cannot pass up.”

Layer, now an assistant coach at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., attended Smith’s workout with the Wizards and said it went well.

“I think he’s ready,” Layer said. “I think he’s ready, I think his skill set and size and athletic ability have been demonstrated very publicly in the past few weeks, and I think his stock is very solid, and in some cases, has risen.”
