Malone over Duncan?

yeah...the main reason is because Duncan has more around him the Malone had....I know Stockton and Horny, but still Malone never got a title because he had to deal with much better comp than Duncan does....but Duncan is in my top 10 all time

I've had this discussion enough times to give this a go ...

PG - The Big O
SG - His Airness
SF - The Hick from French Lick
PF - Timmy
C - Wilt the Stilt

Yeah, I know my selection at the point is controversial. But hey, I grew up in Cincy. In fact, I would have no quarrels with other picks at every position outside of shooting guard.

You know I am a big Dream fan having covered him in his prime during the championship years. But its tough to deny the numbers of Wilt even with him playing against smaller posts.

My favorite all-time center is the Admiral. But I'd give deference to both Dream & Wilt in this discussion. As for Jablunt, no thanks.

Any all-time list that doesn't include Oscar Robertson is incomplete. I see that Sly had that one covered. Steve Nash may be the second best thing at point gaurd. And Magic would be much deeper on my list.

Also, there are several players, too numerous to mention, that would have to get the nod over Karl Malone at PF.

Lastly, Jordon never saw a zone defense because they were illegal during his era. He was a great one-on-one player, but his career may have looked different if teams would have been allowed to defend the guy. Think about it, what would Randy Moss or TO look like if only one player, by rule, was allowed to cover them. Having said that, I still think that Michael is one of the great ones, just not the greatest, and a little over-rated. He still gets my vote as the best two-gaurd ever, but there are others that a case can be made for as well.

If you kids actually think nash is the best ever, you need to catch ESPN Classic some time. Steve is certainly the best of the past ten years, but that's about it. He plays in an era when playmakers are in short supply.

I guess my all-time team would look something like this:

1. Oscar Robertson (only player to average a triple double)
2. Michael Jordon (couldn't be gaurded one-on-one)
3. Larry Bird (Mr. Clutch)
4. Julius Erving (Unstoppable in his prime)
5. Bill Russell (you win championships with players like Russell, not stats)

Bench:

Steve Nash
John Havlicek
Rick Barry
Tim Duncan
Wilt Chamberlain
Kobe Bryan
Elgin Baylor
Nate Archibald

I have a hard time seeing Dr. J at the four. He's in the argument at three with the Hick IMHO.

Starters
Magic
Jordan
Erving
Russell
Wilt.

Bench:

Bird
Duncan
Kobe
Shaq
Oscar
Stockton
Kareem

Nash is not in the conversation IMO.
Kevin McHale,
Isaiah Thomas
Hakeem Olajuwon are 3 that were tough to leave off the team for me.

Dox, Jordan over-rated? That is funnier to me than when people call Tim Duncan the best ever in one sentence then say he is under-rated. If they played zones the way they do now Jordan would score 40 a night because he would just shoot the pull up jumber all day! He would have found a way to score, make his team better and win. And I am NOT a Jordan fan btw. My favorite was Dr Julius Erving as it was ingrained in my head growing up in Philly.

As much as I don't like TODAY'S NBA...I love discussions like this. Allow me to deviate a bit.

PG...John Stockton or Magic? I will go with Magic b/c he could score if needed. Stockton can back him up.

SG..MJ. End of discussion there. Oscar Robertson would be good, too. Anyone averaging a TRIPLE DOUBLE over a season has a spot on my team. If I want to go with a 3 guard offense, PISTOL PETE would be here, as well.

SF..Elgin Baylor. As smooth as they came and his came could easily carry over to this era.

PF..Tough call. I'll go with Duncan. He's a winner. Mailman can deliver as the back-up.

C...Bill Russell. He defends and won't care if he doesn't get shots. Akeem the Dream as my 2nd teamer.

bill russell: 11 titles. should be no contest for starting center. arguably the most valuable player to ever wear an nba uniform.

wilt was a loser who couldnt deliver in the clutch, and at times didnt want to. in one nba finals game against the celtics his coach wanted to inbound the ball to him with only a few seconds to go with his team leading. wilt told him he didnt want to get the ball because he didnt want to shoot free throws. what happens next? celtics steal the inbounds pass and get a layup to win the game. to this day people from both teams still say that if wilt would have been willing to receive the inbounds pass that the celtics would have never won that game.

I'll give Jordan his just due and put him on the team as the best two, however, he can't be regarded as the best ever when he's never even been double-teamed in his professional career. Players like Oscar Robertson and Dr. J had to deal with all kinds of defensive looks that were designed to stop them. Nothing epitimizes the Jordon that era better than when Mark Jackson, as a gaurd, would post his man up in the low post with his back to the basket and lay it in. Any effort to stop it and the whistle blows for illegal defense. Now had Jordon played with real basketball rules, with real defense, and if he were allowed only two steps off the dribble, then we'd have a better idea. If he could dominate under those conditions, then he could be arguably the best ever. For me, Big-O and Dr. J are tied for the best ever.

The Shaq is one of my favortive people with regard to personality. But his game is an absolute joke in terms of real basketball. He shoots like a handicapped person and he constantly fouls his opponent and it's hardly ever called. He's a myth created by poor officiating and ridiculous rules.

Julius Erving was versitile enough to play either the three or four, but he dominated with his inside game. Even when he played the three, he played it like a four. At 6-7, I'll put the doctor up against any power forward in any era.

Yes, Steve Nash is headed for greatness. He's as tough as nails; his leadership, playmaking, and ball-handling skills are as good as any of the all-timers; and he's a clutch scorer. He should have won his third straight MVP this season, but he missed it by a hair. Add a couple of decent players to that team and he'll start piling up championships.

Magic was a great player but lacked mobility due to his size and had limited range as an outside scorer. Certainly, he's a legitimate hall of famer. Someone mentioned Nate Archibald and Magic Johnson in the same breath. Nate Archibald was a perfect pinpoint passer, a dangerous penetrator, and a tremendous shooter, who had the range to consistently hit shots from anywhere on the floor. He was scary quick, and if you didn't bring your A game, he'd pick your pocket, over and over again. I'll give away 6 inches and take Tiny any day over Magic. In fact, I don't know very many people who witnessed both players and favor Magic over Tiny.

Willis Reed, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy ,Hal Greer, Walt Frazer, Jerry West, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, and Dave Cowens are certainly among the names worthy to be mentioned.

You know, the more I think about, and as much as I loved The Doctor, I really have to give the nod as the greatest player ever to the Big-O, Oscar Robertson.

Here's why:

In only his second season of play, he became the only player to actually average a triple double for the season: 31pts, 13rbs, and 10 assists! And he was a point gaurd!

When he ended his career, only Wilt and Russell had scored more points than Oscar. In addition, he ended his career as both the all-time scoring leader as a gaurd and the all-time assists leader. He would still be the all-time assists leader if assists were given as generously as they are today. His era was more stingy with regard to that stat. Just look at his counterparts and see the distance between him and the rest of the pack.

At 6-5, 210lbs., he actually led the league in rebounding one year as a point guard!!!

Born in Indianapolis, as was our very own Ritchie Mckay, Robertson, lived and played in an era of true racism and he overcame it with both grace and dignity.

He rarely had a supporting cast in Cincinatti, but late in his career, he was inexplicably traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, where he teamed up with Lew Alcinder to win the NBA championship in his first year there.

Over his career, he averaged 26pts, 10 assists, and 8 boards.

He is far and away, the most versitile player ever, and in my estimation, the greatest player ever to play the game.

Nobody going to start Hakeem?

I'd go with this five...

Jordan, Magic, Bird, Olajuwon, Wilt Chamberlain

Dream Team I was about as good as it gets.
5 for 5 rule Meeting
