So the education thing is probably a big help to us.

It's all going to come down to what we can pay and how much he really wants his own program.

Lee interviewed yesterday with Barber for better than an hour for the Head Coach position. He had some very specific ideas for getting to Omaha and to build a state of the art stadium.

Great scoop...
...thanks, Judge. Great to hear someone came in with a specific plan...that should impress Barber.

...and if he wants his own program to be us. I'm sure he does want his own program, but he may want it to be at a BIGGER school.

So we may be in a situation where we have an alum, former Major Leaguer, who we could probably afford to pay less going up against one of the top recruiters in the country that we will have to pay a lot, both with no head coaching experience.

I'd be happy with either one honestly, but the more I read about Toman the more I like him. Then again, the more I read about him, the more I think it's going to be hard to get him.

I went to school w/Lee and got to know him a little during rehearsals for the Passion Play. I was a theatre major, and several baseball players and wrestlers (including Lee and Jesse Castro) took advantage of the option to participate as extras in the play for their christian service assignment. To say that Lee was an imposing figure at 6'8" in a Roman centurian costume would be an understatement. He struck me as a humble, down to earth guy, and I recall thinking what a great couple he and his future wife seemed to be.

It looks like we have at least 2 good options. Let's pray for wisdom for JB in this hire.

Something that only those who saw Lee play in college might know is that he was almost Sid Breams equal as a left-handed power hitter, and was the DH or first baseman when not pitching, so his experience is not limited to pitching only.

olldflame - Sadly, many of posters don't even remember as a NY Yankee much less a Flame. But Lee had a solid career in the bigs and it would be interesting to see our second Yankee head coach (I'll bet Jerry would smile about that).

If Lee is committed to doing this the right way then I'd certainly feel good about him as a hire. Although I don't know whether or not he would come at any form of discount. We'll probably be paying up to either of these known candidates.

The Judge - Are you hearing anything about whether Sid is in the loop eith er with Lee or on his own? I'm as big proponent of homegrown coaches with outside credentials. They tend to have a real passion for the school in addition to the job assignment. That can be pivotal in recruiting success.

I don't remember Lee as a Yankee, I remember him as a Met and a Mariner. Should be interesting week coming up.

Lee actually spent about a half a season as the Yankees closer in arguably his best year in the show. He was ont he way out just as they began that incredible run in the '90s.

Sid indeed submitted his resume. He was still waiting for Barber to contact him for an interview as of Friday morning. Probably done by now. No secret Lee would bring Sid in as assistant if offered head coach job.

I think most of us who have been around the program for a great deal of time would like to see this happen. I realize it is somewhat of a gamble based on their coaching experience. But the upside makes it well worth the effort.

We lost a candidate that took the #1 assistant job at The USC a couple of days a go. Good to see that caliber of person interested in the LU job. "Fight On"

I have just about every card of Lee's autographed somewhere in my house. I grew up with his kids, my dad coached him back in the 70's. Probably a personal Bias, but we know he can coach. Yes toman is a good recruiter but how much actual coaching has he done?(this may be a dumb question already answered, didnt read too much about him) Lee's son Samuel is still 15 or 16 i think, but when he gets to college we will want him at Liberty if at all possible.

Did anybody spot Toman on campus or at church last night with Barber? I was wondering if he was in town last weekend looking us over.

On CockyTalk they were saying he is supposed to be in town this past weekend. I saw no activity in the 7-8 times I drove by the Fieldhouse, though....with Fathers Day, I'd think he'd wait and be in early this week.

I just read that on CockyTalk too.

I saw two people by the field yesterday but couldn't tell who it was.

There were two people in the cages about 1130-1200...but that would have been my son and me.

(and before anyone asks why we were not in church...we go to early worship at our church)

There were some people walking on the field around 5pm. I think it may have even been Royer but I didn't get a chance to get a good look.

Looks like some sort of camp or showcase going on. A lot of cars with parents in the stands.
