I would imagine that they would be with all of the changes that have taken place at LU since 1983. Any guitar pickers out there? I knew of a few back in my day. We would hang out in each others dormrooms exchanging licks and ways of playing tunes from artists such as James Taylor to Leo Kottke. Not many of us had any quailty instruments back then...unless our folks were loaded. You'd see the odd Ovation here and there, but with the exception of 3 Guilds...all I saw were off brands from the far east...including my 12 string Ventura (Martin knock off).

The thing is, most of em only know three chords (that's all you need for praise and worship) and they're not very good at those three chords. I've been looking for people to play with for a while and can't find any that are decent and know how to play anything besides praise and worship.

Drop on by if you're ever in the Richmond, VA area. I love to play (47 now, playing since I was 15). Getting back to playing electric the last year after having been concentrating on acoustic since the late 80s / early 90s. I love alternate tunings and need to brush up on my mandolin as I've developed a bluegrass itch.

I really got into them when one of my sisters introduced me to "How Did You Find Me Here" by David Wilcox in late 1989. From there I started looking into the music of Nick Drake and using my dad's hacksaw to chop up various numbers of kyser capos. I lost count how many capos I sacrificed until partial capos came out by Shubb and Kyser a few years back.

I would be curious to see what folks are playing...as in make, model and artist.

My great grandfather used to play the mandolin when I was a kid with my grandfather on banjo (yeah, I have hillbilly roots). My hand wasn't big enough at the time to be able to play anything yet and by the time it was my great ggrandfather has passed on and my grandfather's arthritis kept him from playing. Oh well.

All that said, my favorite axeman tend to be of the electric variety.

I find something very honest about the sounds that are made when skin is on steel. No effects at all. It's just you and the instrument; however, there are times when craking it up to 11 feels great! One of these days I plan on getting a handmade electric guitar one of these dyas, but until that time comes, I'll make do with my Jay Turser Les Paul copy (had the original pickups replaced with a pair of Gibson Classic 57s...very nice sound for the $$ invested).

I think it's evolved into instruments rather than a style of music. FWIW...I had the chance to buy a Tonesmith guitar form one of the guys in Sixpence none the Richer when they played in Richmond at the Floodzone in 98...but I didn't. Could kick myself when I look back on it.

1. 1986 Fender Stratocaster (Japan) in 3-tone sunburst - It had a weird System I bridge with a locking nut (though I disabled that). It also had a Seymour Duncan Hotrails pickup in the bridge position with a custom switch installed so you could use only one of the two coils. So freakin' awesome.

2. 1998 Epiphone Les Paul in Tobacco Burst - Technically a downgrade from my Strat, but that weird Japanese bridge had started to have some problems and finding replacement parts for it at the time was next to impossible. So, I had to make a change. This actually turned out to be a decent guitar, though I always wanted to put Gibson PAF Humbuckers in it instead of the not so great Epi pickups.

3. 1999 Epiphone Riviera in Silver Flake: I always wanted a semi-hollowbody guitar and I love the way the Riviera looks. I went with the Silver Flake not because I liked the finish, but because the models with that finish had the full-size humbuckers instead of the mini-humbuckers that were standard in Rivieras. This made them much closer to an ES-335 in sound, which I loved.

Yeah, I've seen it. Sixpence played Richmond quite a few times (about 5) during their time together. The last time they were here, Matt played that guitar and a blonde Tele. Sean (the other guitar player) played a Tonesmith http://www.tonesmith.com/ and a Lowden for his acoustic parts.

I'm seriously down with SRV as well. If you are ever in Austin, there's a statue by Town Lake. I used to catch Sixpence all the time before they signed nationally on Sixth Street and at Stubbs.
