Of course, mine is the 17th century English philospher.
Really into social contract theory, huh?
Absolutely. Yourself?

Dude lost me at tabula rasa.

Which, come to think of it, may explain the entire show.

Tonight's season finale had a flash forward to when Jack and Kate were OFF the island, and Jack was a drunk & a drug addict and was telling Kate they they need to go back to the island because they should have never left in the first place.

I called it in the middle of the episode. For some reason I wondered aloud if they would have any flash forwards and perhaps we are watching one now and had seen one previously. I wonder if they left people on the island??

You know Locke is staying, even if he has to tie himself to a tree or hide in an outhouse.

What a great episode last night! I loved the flash forward. But this now leads to this question? Who was in the coffin? It had to be someone who:
1. Someone who Jack was attatched to enough to cry
2. Someone who Kate hated enough NOT to attend the viewing
3. Had absolutely no friends/family

Locke - certainly can be hated by many...no family, but he is not leaving the island voluntarily.
Ben - No friends/family because he was raised on the island, but again...he is not leaving the island voluntarily
- Jack would have been upset over both of these, because they both told him he needs to stay on the island
Sawyer - No friends/family (except for Clementine) He could have ticked Kate off enough so that she would not want to go to the funeral

All in all..fantastic episode. It is a long time before it returns again.

although i think that whoever is in the coffin will be irrelevant as i believe the flashforwards are a result of a decision that jack and the losties will end up NOT making, i believe its john.

reasoning:

- Jack showed up. if it was ben i don't believe he'd of gone. there is a possibility that in future episodes the become friends but that is unlikely.
- John and jack weren't chummy (friend or family - neither) but i think there was still some mutual respect there.
- The name is J- Bantham. i believe its john bantham....locke changed his name upon returning...
- Jack showed up because he thought kate and some of the other losties would show up....

it also may be someone we havne't even met yet

Do you truly believe that it was a flash forward? The only reason I ask is due to this space/time continuum that keeps getting mentioned by the producers.
There is definitely some credence to this due to the fact that Jack had a prescription pad from his dad as well as the reference to Dr. Mike Cannon (Las Vegas reference) when he said "Bring my dad down here, and if he is more drunk than me, then you can fire me"
Obviously he can just be making a crude reference about his dad being dead, and in reference to the fact that he was always drunk while he was working, but there is always that other possibility....

Who knows...in this time space continuum theory, one action in the past can effect the future...ie Desmonds flashes

More random thoughts...

Did Walt look much older to you? He definately did to me...probably not done by accident.

Why wasn't Kate arrested upon her return?

A rumor I heard, but have not seen anything to back it up...the two people Jack "saved" were actually Rachel and her son (Juliet's sister). I did not pay attention.....any thoughts?

Walt is 3 years older in real life. There's not much they can do about that when the show has been taking place over a timeline of 3-4 months. I think you've got to give them a break.

Walt looked older because in real life, it's been three years, so of course he looks much older. That's believed to be one of the reasons the show had to get rid of him, you can't hide the fact that a kid grows a lot in 3-6 years, yet they've only been on the island for several months.

I also think that it was either Locke, Ben, or Sawyer in the coffin, and there's still three seasons of people ticking each other off, so that could explain why Kate wouldn't want to see any of them. But, of course, Kate is still a fugitive, so she should also be in prison.

I'm starting to think the chick who parachuted on the island to become target practice for Locke was sent by Penni's dad to get Desmond, and not for Penni's sake either.

If the flash forward is really what's going to happen, I kind of wonder if that was a mistake. The show just answered one of the two biggest mysteries of all: Are they going to get off the island. I think that gets rid of a lot of the incentive for the fans who are diehard-theory-driven maniacs to watch the show.

I think they made him look older on purpose...camera angle from Locke's point of view...making him look taller. Time on the island is different than off. Maybe not, but I think there is something to it...

walt looks older just because he is older....plus i don't even think that was really walt at all...

kate was either granted pardon or took the place of another passenger is what i suspect

that boy was at least 7 years old.....i dont' think that much time has passed....

and yes i do entirely believe it really was a flash forward...

OK...how about this...We see Penny call the Looking Glass Hatch. She was not answering a distress call...she was MAKING the call to the hatch...she knew how to contact it...so, we all assume that her dad is involved in this somehow, but is Penny also? Why else would she be calling the looking glass hatch?

Walt would only be one year older than when we saw him in last years finale...he looked older than if he aged one year??

i agree...i don't think penny is a good guy in all of this for some reason....that helped my feelings toward that as it was pretty suspicious.

its amazing how much older a kid can get in just 1 year. my brother when he was 7 looks seven and when he was 8 looked like he was 13....

I should have put that this was the obituary article that Jack was reading last night. It looks like the name of the guy in the coffin starts with a J. I'm thinking it could be one of the three John, Jacob, or James (Sawyer). It could be a character that is yet to be introduced as well.

Great season finale!
One question...why the heck didn't Charlie get out of the room? I know he was "supposed to die" according to Desmond, but come on! Get your scrawny butt out of there!

A counterpoint would be that Penny was spending her time scanning frequencies trying to find something and that once Charlie had disabled the jamming system, her transmission finally went through was was picked up by the station...although, the Canada comment geared toward one of the underwater station chicks by the guy who set off the grenade was interesting since a ways back they showed thsoe researchers/search & rescue (?) in an arctic setting...

The door had to be latched from the inside.

As for Walt, if it's really Walt, I think it's present-day, flash-forward Walt. He warned Island Locke about what would happen if they contacted Naomi's boat. This is why he told Jack that it wasn't supposed to happen that way. Walt told him about the future.

There were many ways Charlie could have saved himself. I'm pretty sure I saw a sealing latch on the outside of the door. He could have swam out the huge window when the room filled up with water. He could have ran out of the room and grabbed the SCUBA gear. The point was he was embracing his destiny. The vision had him drowning and Claire and the baby being saved. He felt he had to die to ensure they were saved.

If there was a latch on the outside, why did Desmond grab a fire extinguisher to break the porthole?
