Diez y Seis de Septiembre is a cool holiday. I've been to Dolores Hidalgo where they rang the bells to call everyone into battle. But I'll save that discussion the fall.

Cinco de Mayo became the de facto Mexican Heritage Day by all those Texans & Californians whose homes were in Mexico long before the Gringos took over. And yes, I consider the Spanish-American War one of the dark times of US history. That's one of the reasons it is glossed over in most history textbooks.

The Battle of Pueblo was a great victory over the Frenchies, but it really isn't that significant in the grand scheme of things. But until there is a holiday with Hispanic overtones in the US (like MLK Day) then Cinco de Mayo will have to suffice.

And if you need a fifth of Mayonnaise to get through the day, I would suggest you pass on A and head straight to Jenny Craig.

I don't think people view college football in the same way as things like Mardi Gras and Cinco de Mayo...actually i know they don't....

this history is there, but most people could care less about the history...much like our Independence Day is viewed by the majority of Americans a time to BBQ and light fireworks with little thought about it being the day we signed the Deceleration of Independence to be sent to England....

Call me crazy, but perhaps if they'd give ACTUAL NAMES to their holidays instead of just calling them by the date, perceptions wouldn't get so screwed up.

If it was called "March 17th" instead of "Saint Patrick's Day", you'd expect people from non-celebrating cultures to be a little wishy washy on things.

La Carreta on Timberlake and in Madison Heights is good. Stay away from the one on Lakeside.
Tlaquepaque on 221 is good.
If you have absolutely no money and don't care what it tastes like, there's El Cabrito's.

Frankly, the best Mex in the area is in Bedford. Mexico Viejo on 460 or El Cazador on Longwood are both excellent.

La Carreta out on Timberlake used to be awful when I was in school and was overpriced to boot. I ate at a decent taqueria-style place about 10 years ago on a visit that was on Wards Road across from K-Mart. It was overpriced compared to what i pay in Texas, but it wasn't awful and it was authentic.

As for El Cabritos, a friend & I used to do their commercials for them years ago. My buddy was a claymation expert and he does great animation still today. The lead character was 'Tony Taco' and we had one spot where he played guitar with 'Billy the Refried Bean' on bass and an iguana playing drums. If anybody like Knucklehead has access to those old spots I'd L O V E to see them on YouTube.

Is the Bedford mexican restaurant on 460 connected to a hotel and has an old wooden wagon out front? If so, I drive past there all the time but have never stopped to eat.

I am American too, but if you saw me you might just think I am up tonight celebrating Cinco de Mayo (not because I looked like I am smashed). I am Mexican and let the Mexican and Spanish have their day just like all nationalities need to and just move on if you don't want to smack a pinata.
