From the Roanoke fishwrap:
VHSL makes hoops, football changes
Group A basketball will be split in two and Salem will host two football title games.

By Robert Anderson
981-3123

The VHSL also took a landmark step by voting to move the Group AAA Division 6 and Division 5 football championship games to the University of Virginia's 61,500-seat Scott Stadium in Charlottesville.

The Group AA Division 4 and Division 3 championship games will remain at Liberty University in Lynchburg.

"It's a three-year proposal," committee member Billy Haun, the principal at Monticello High School, said of the Group AAA move to UVa. "Right now it's for one year for sure with an option for two or three based on how it works out financially."

The hoops tourney has been gone for several years...perhaps JJ Redick's final year in HS. The AA football has always been attended well here in town...especially since most times a local (within an hour) team will be in one of the games.

i doubt you will ever see hoops come back. the VCU siegel center has done a great job. lynchburg for AA football as rooskie said is very central, and the new fieldturf certainly helped the cause. i think the football games should stay in richmond or at the beach, but their is not a stadium big enough to accomodate, or the field surface is pretty bad.

The one area that the VHSL and VCU do a lousy job is clearing the gym after each game. Last year, I think it was the AAA game...many folks that paid for tickets could not get into their game b/c folks did not leave after the preceding game.

The 757 absolutely needs a football stadium capable of hosting a championship. I could see Landstown (VA Beach) as a possible host -- with a ton of land next to it and with Landstown being a continous power in that area.

Isn't ODU putting up a stadium around one of their fields as they start up football?

Frankly I would think a central location would be more fair to the entire state.

I believe ODU's plan is to be up and running by 2009. The ampitheatre being right there next to Landstown and having the soccer stadium in which the Mariners play is a prime location for a football field.

I may be the only one who gives a rip about the location of a football field in the 757, though.

HA! I hadn't seen your new sig, and I thought you were proposing a FedEx field like stadium at Lanstown High. Thanks for the laugh.

The thing about trying to build a big stadium without a permanent occupant is that...well, who would play there on a regular basis? I have been to the last couple of region championship games at Norfolk State. That stadium works great for that type of game, although, I would like to see some real grass (or at least something green) on the field for the big games. It is always kind of yellowish-brown by November.

I thought that was part of the problem that resulted in LU losing the tournament...
