With Six Flags closing down so many parks, they should be packing in all of the rides at their existing properties.

My favorite wooden roller coaster from my childhood and teenage years was the Big Dipper at Camden Park in Huntington, WV (Bryson, you'll have to ask your WV relatives about that one).

I rode the Big Dipper (I grew up 40 minutes from Huntington). Although I admit it didn't do much dipping in comparison to my regular trips to Kings Island.

Sly, if you've ridden Camden Park's "Big Dipper," do also have experience going on that park's Haunted House ride?

Sly...ever heard of Belleville, WV? It is just up the river from Huntington...I would spend my summers there as it is where my Mom's folks are from.

cider, my relatives knew alllll about the big dipper.

sounds like THE roller coaster. out of curiosity, what else does WV offer in the amusement park department? i haven't heard much from my family about childhood trips to places such as Camden Park.

Anyone from NC go to Ghost Mountain back before the storms tore most of it down? It's in Maggy Valley.

i'm about 95% confident i have been there, but it's been too long for me to remember it. i'll ask mom about it sometime.

i'm guessing there was some pretty good stuff there?

how about tweetsie railroad in NC?! surely someone has been there! i went numerous times as a child, but i can't remember it very well. according to the website, the ferris wheel and train are the biggest attractions! sounds like a no-go unless you've got kids or are under the age of 8... but i used to get excited about it!

I went to Ghost Town with church camp. They really only had one roller coaster. The had one of those twister things but they put it in a room and cut the lights off and had strobe lights so that made it different. Their swings also swung you off the side of the mountain. You had to take a huge chairlift up the mountain to even get to the rides.

I went to Tweetsie in 04 with work. It's nothing special. It's mainly for younger kids.

Henry, I grew up about 15 minutes from Belville, WV, and my dad used to take me fishing there at the Locks.

Bryson, to the best of my knowledge, Camden Park is the ONLY amusement park in the entire state of West Virginia, and it was there decades before Kings Island was ever built in Cincinnati. For youth trips at our Ravenswood church, we only had 3 options--Camden Park, Kings Island, or Cedar Point. More often than not, since it was closer, cheaper, and still in state, we usually went to Camden Park.

OH I am all about Cedar Point!! Have been since the Corkscrew and Gemini were NEW!!!! That is a big problem though, b/c it absolutely ruins EVERY OTHER park you go to because you compare their one or two puny roller coasters to CP. However, my favorite roller coaster is THE HULK. Love the sensory deprivation than overload b4 you are launched and can't see the track. Outstanding, but afterwards you are like, "OK, there's Dueling Dragons (Not bad) and then.........." where as at CP you are SPRINTING to the next coaster.
Other Coaster Thoughts:
I enjoy the Magnum alot at CP. It was the original MEGA Coaster and I like riding it with my shirt pulled over my head. Very funny at the Pic stand
2. Knottsberry Farm sort of has a mini Top Fuel Dragster that I enjoyed a lot.
3. Mrs Purple is all about the RAPTOR. Very fun and my fav inverted coaster
4. Not a big fan of any coaster I have to stand up to ride. Those little "supports" are precariously placed on the lower abdominal region of my anatomy.
5. The roller coaster on top of the tower in Vegas doesn't look like much, but MAN IT IS HIGH! (Also like the NY NY one)
6. Wooden roller coasters are horrible EXCEPT for the Blue Streak at CP where you rise out of your seat about a foot down the back stretch.
7. Top Fuel Dragster has been shut down the last three times I have been to CP. Once b/c the cable shredded a tad and everyone had little metal shards in their faces and had to get EMT assistance (Where was PA when you needed him? Oh that is right he is not tall enough for the rides!!)
8. My favorite story is my first time on the Millenium Force. I like the way you are taken to the top magnetically so you NEVER know when the top is coming. But since Mrs Purple and I are taller than average, we can always sit in the second car and it still feels like the front b/c we can see over the top of everyone. So here we go up to the top, and Mrs P is a tad figity. As we are just about to crest I look over and point and say "Hey look, there's CANADA" She looks and says "Where?" and down we go!!!! What made it even better is that there are no Oh S&%*( handles on the front of the car so when she went to grab something she didn't have anything. (Yes she did pee her pants also!!!)
