Are you passionate about Liberty Athletics? Do you desire to see our athletics program go to the next level? Do you want to be a part of creating a student-oriented pre-game atmosphere that is fun, exciting and original?

The Liberty University Athletics Department and the Student Flames Club (SFC) are looking for some enthusiastic and devoted students who would like to work on a committee of six people as the voice of the student body. This group will have collective influence on the upcoming football and basketball seasons, and will help cultivate the best pre-game atmosphere and student body support. You will interact and work with our athletics department personnel, Christian service will be awarded, and your experience will be valuable on your resume.

E-mail flamesclub@liberty.edu if you are interested, and Allen Sparks, the SFC president, will be in touch with you. Don't miss this opportunity to make a difference with your athletics program and student body!

SJ....YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!

I think this is for you.

Of course that means if you are one of the six, then you need to take the advice of the FF crew. 8)

You're new, you don't know the back story.

I was one of the original leadership. I was told that I was using the club for personal gain to gain friendships because I thought we should do some type of SFC get together, and was told I needed to stop being as personable in e-mails to the group because they didn't want me being the face of the group, even though I was the only leader that actually sat with the group at games. I stepped down, and now they're trying to set up a few of my ideas that I said for last year for this year.

Someone else will have to do this, I tried and was shot down.

SJ was the original leader of the SFC. i think he is wanting someone else to carry the flag, thus this post.

To clarify, I was one of four leaders. I don't want to become the face of the group or anything.

I still have people coming up to me thinking I'm in charge.

OK, without knowing the history, I still would have chosen you. Unfortunately, too many times, these positions become student administration positions with someone telling others what needs to be done. The organization is important, but ultimately, you need a core group of fans that lead the student body on game days.

SJ, sorry you got the rough treatment last year. I think you should take the time to create a thorough post of your ideas. Others can add their two cents and in the end, you (and this site) will wield more influence.

I was being sarcastic Smoothie.

I feel like I can get more done by using this website, gameday, and my personality than I can if i was to try to go through the SFC. That's the way it was at the end of football season and for basketball season this year.

I've put multiple lists of things on here before, I can dig them up if you really want to read some of my ideas.

yea, it was a loss to the student's flame club. i know my involvement went way down hill after jon was out (although it shouldn't have). his enthusiasm was what had me dying to come to the games and events... even before i actually knew him.

i'd look into doing it.

anything they come up with to do, we're probably already doing.. ie tailgating, traveling to away games, etc.
I don't think i'll even join the club this year, b/c i can travel to away games by carpooling cheaper than buses, if they decided to do that this year. and i'm not taligating with them, so... thats out.

Even if it may be cheaper to carpool to a game, bus trips are worth the money. It's much more convenient (you can sleep rather than drive) and the actual bus rides are generally fun.

They're talking about live music before games for next year and an SFC outing. I suggested both last year and they were shot down saying they couldn't do it because we didn't have the resources, when they didn't even let me try (it's not like I don't know how the local music scene works).

Before someone accuses me of it, I'll admit that yes, I'm still "bitter" about the whole thing because I was passionate about it and feel I could do a better job than everyone doing it now.

One of the leaders was confronted during basketball season saying, "Why aren't you helping get people here to these game?" Her response was, "It's not my job to." The point of the group is: "Liberty University undergraduate resident students can support their athletics program and the Flames Club mission, while also helping to build school spirit and a stronger home field/home court advantage, by joining the Student Flames Club (SFC)." I don't remember the last time I saw one of the leaders in the student section of a game.

What I find hilarious is that there are currently 278 members in the SFC group on Facebook that I took the time to invite and all of that this summer. The "new" group that they were supposed to join later in the year only has 15 members.

I could've put "they," but I wanted to point out which person it was without actually giving a name.

The problem was there wasn't any communication between the group and the administration. For example, whoever was in charge for the football games lowered the ropes mid-way through the first quarter of the game. LUPD came back about 10 minutes later and made people who had been there hours before the game because they were below the line.

That was the end of the line for the SFC for me.

i think it'd be cool to represent the student body. i don't know the head student's name, but i'd never be able to put as much time into it as him. i always saw him parked at the athletic building and at all the games. not sure what his responsibilites were. anyways...

what do you think jon? certainly would be able to better pass along thoughts and ideas from FF.

The student who is the president works directly under Bob Good. He gets paid to be at the games and it's part of his job. He was given the title of "president" because he already worked there, not because he knew how to run a student club like this.

He does a whole lot of work for Bob and the Flames Club though. That's his main job.

One of the problems with the SFC was that the leaders had other responsibilities. Allen (president) works for Bob and has to do stuff with the Flames Club to make sure the donors are treated the way they're supposed to. Josh works in media relations and has to do stuff with them. Lynae works for student life and I guess might have to do stuff with them. Those three had other responsibilities that kept them from helping to build school spirit and a stronger home field/home court advantage. None of them had contact with the students because of this.

Go for it. They need someone who's dedicated.

However, before you do, realize that you may have to skip Dook games next year and go to LU ones instead. If you're going to be a leader, I'm going to hold you to being at the home games.

With all that said, I still wouldn't mind having that job...sure it could be stressful at times, but it be kind of fun....

Don't get me wrong, it's probably a good job, especially for an SMGT major like Allen, but that's one of the reasons why the SFC's communication was bad.

That's what I'm talking about. A leader has to be set on going to LU games, ESPECIALLY conference games. If you get a once in a lifetime opportunity while we play Cinci Christian, then take the opportunity, but conference games are huge.
