Is Greg Marshall headed to Wichita State?

It would clearly be a step up for Marshall and he appears to be WSU's primary focus at this time.

If he moves on, who replaces him? Randy Peale?[/b]

wouldn't that be quite the paradox...Mark Turgeon gets the job at a high major school and Greg Marshall (whose Winthrop Eagles beat Turgeon's Shockers) goes to WSU??? was Marshall even in the running for the Aggie job?

The Missouri Valley Conference would be a major step up for Marshall. Wichita State has a large fan base, they are very competitive with the likes of Southern Illinois and Creighton, and Wichita State advanced to the sweet-sixteen in '06. The MVC is a top mid-major conference that Marshall would have the opportunity to win in with WSU. This would be a great opportunity for Marshall who would more than double both his salary as well as his exposure if he is offered the job.

It certainly is a step up in conference. I think the RPI of the MVC is like 6th.

Would he be able to go to the dance 7 times in the next 9 years? Of course not, but I don't think he'll be able to do that again in the Big South either. I'm sure Wichita State can at least match what Winthrop is offering salary-wise.

I most definitely agree with that...is it fair to say that Marshall has not been offered a big-time job because he has yet to prove himself at a high mid-major or major level? If so, then obviously WSU fits that bill and if he achieves the same success there then it would be on to the majors

If Marshall moves on I think SCAR should put his name in the hat for Winthrop. He is on the record here saying that he knows many people in Rock Hill :D

I'd be lobbying hard for that A&M job, if I were Marshall.

Rock Hill, Little Rock, Rock Island, Plymouth Rock, Sgt. Rock. Where doesn't SCAR know many people?

Previously, Marshall turned down offers from the College of Charleston and South Florida, however, an opportunity with WSU would far outweigh the other two. This would be GM's best opportunity to date. I heard that the former WSU coach was making 750K a year before he moved on to Texas A & M last week.

You kidding me? The MVC over the Big East? Marshall would be nuts to leave for WSU...
...that would be quite the shocker to me.

I'd be shocked if he didn't take it, if he gets the offer. It may be a done deal by the end of the weekend.

the only things that could keep him at WU is the fact that Wichita is in Kansas. Or if they didn't offer.

I don't see why moving to Kansas would be a problem at all. If he gets the offer, then he's got to take it. It's that simple.

I think he's reluctant to uproot his family. Surely he would if the deal was sweet enough, but I think he'd rather stay in the South.

For the record, my sources tell me GM was on the short list at A&M. He just wasn't atop it.

I get the idea that Gregg seems to think he's high major material and he won't accept anything below those overblown standards. that's why I don't see him in Wichita even though it would be a big step up from WU.

I happen to know a few folks in Rock Hill 8) By the way "we didn't land on Plymouth Rock! Plymouth Rock landed on us!" The movie X anyone? Anyone? Ok, I don't think GM will take this job. In my opinion unless he sees the wheels falling off, he won't be leaving WU until a major southern school comes calling probably in the SEC or ACC. At least not for a few more years....We shall see. If he does leave, Peele would be in I would think.

I agree with Sly on that one...many of us have seen him first hand on the sideline and he doesn't seem like the most humble person in the world...that doesn't mean he's not high major material I just don't think you can make the jump straight from Winthrop to say College Station, or Kentucky, or Iowa

He may be slightly eccentric with an overly high estimation of himself, but we have to assume that he is smart enough to not pass on this one. This would be an opportunity to take over one of the top three programs in the Missouri Valley Conference. If he makes the NCAA's in this conference, he gets to be a five seed, rather than the typical 15 seed that he is accustomed to at WU. In addition, he was apparently offered one million a year to coach WSU. This situation appears to be too good for even Gregg Marshall to pass up.

... Looks like the offical word will come sometime tommorow, but he's expected to take the job nonetheless.

Wichita St. offers Marshall near $1M; answer expected in 24 hours

CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer

Wichita State officials have offered Gregg Marshall the chance to fill their vacancy, and the Winthrop coach told the school he will deliver a final answer in 24 hours, a source close to the program told CBS SportsLine.com on Friday.

According the source, Marshall -- who visited the WSU campus and met with players Friday -- was offered a package that could approach nearly $1 million per year, roughly $250,000 more than Wichita State was paying Mark Turgeon, who left earlier this week for Texas A&M. Given the financial implications, the source said Marshall -- who only makes about $400,000 a year at Winthrop -- is expected to accept the position barring a last-minute change of plans, though it's worth noting Marshall is famous for last-minute changes in plans considering he accepted the Charleston job last year before pulling out and returning to Winthrop.

Marshall is 194-83 in nine years at Winthrop. He led the Eagles to a 29-5 mark and win over Notre Dame in the NCAA Tournament this past season.

Wichita State is expected to return five of its top eight players from a team that finished 17-14, but was at one time ranked in the top 10 of both major polls. The star is P.J. Couisnard, a 6-foot-4 wing who averaged 11.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game as a junior.
