More Lovett background: he was a pastor in Alabama, where his first wife died of cancer. Susan was his teenage babysitter, whom he married shortly after his first wife's death. He put her through the University of Alabama, where she earned her B.A. and M.A., and then she eventually finished up her Ed.D. from LU just before they left for Chattanooga. She was actually the Chair of the FACS dept. here before they left. Lovett loves his Harley and loves sports as well. And he is as southern as it gets. I was in Lovett's last Evangelism class...that class made me more angry then anything...his views on evangelism were severely different then mine....he was funny at times in class....the book he had us read was terribly written, and i am a terrible writer myself, so this isn't saying a whole lot....

THe Jesus is awesome thing was funny for about 2 weeks.....i can't say i was sad to see him go

and the rumors about his son.....and unlike the Flame rumor, these rumors seem to have plenty of confirmation....i hear that he is actually working at TTU with his father again....but that could just be one of those rumors....

3rd one down. Every indication I've heard (from those who knew him) is that he took things seriously and did his part to right the ship. I can't testify anything first hand but from those I talk to he has been very contrite and done an admirable job of getting right and aiming to be a productive member of God's family.

I always felt like I was in a bad talk show in Lovett's Evangalism class. Both 1113 and 1114 were opened and something like 500 people were in the class. He'd walk around with the microphone and make people answer questions randomly.

And, for the record, "Evangelical" was a bad word at Temple; we much preferred John R. Rice's term--Fundamentalist.

Other connections LU to TTU and vice versa - Anyone remember Matt Danuser who transferred from JUCO ranks and played at Temple and then transferred to LU for his senior season. He played on the team that went to the NAIA nationals 1983 I believe. LU recruited Joe Fulp out of high school and he ended up at Temple and is one of there better players. He was a 6'4" small forward. Nathan Day transfered after his freshman year at Temple and started for Hanky for a few years. His brother Jeremy was a better recruit than Nathan and started one year for Dunton during his interim year and then had back problems and left LU.

VERY early in his brief LU carreer we played Texas and Jeremy Day had a monster first half against Chris Mihm and ended up playing him pretty much even for the game, although Texas won in a blowout. Jeremy was not as athletic as Nathan, but was 6'9" plus with long arms, and was very sound fundamentally. Besides the back problems, I don't think he was a Hanky type of player. Mel was obsessed with athleticism, and let some really skilled players go because he didn't think they could play his style of defense.

You are right about Hanky's defenses. A little more than organized chaos with defensive schemes so difficult to learn it took a year to figure it out then it was too late unless you had someone as athletic as Carl Williams playing guard. I think Jeremy would have been a good player for LU and Jeff Meyers spoke highly of him. It seems like he played very well early in his first and only year, includeing the Texas game, at LU then the back problems got worse and it affected his play when conference play began. I remember him and Adam Hopkins rotating quite a bit.

True Storys (Since we are talking DL and Sports):
I was officiating a JF game, can't tell you who they were playing. As I walk off at half time Crazy Danny comes down the bleachers and starts yelling at me and my crew. He is really going of Mark Hines style on us. The JF AD was right next to him I looked at the AD and as I pointed to DL I said "You need to tell that man and his muskrat that if they don't calm down they are gonna have to leave" (A portion of his "wardrobe" was slightly askew)

When Mrs Purple was at Hilltopper High as coach they played DL's girls at LCA. The day after the game i was raiding The Hanger and DL is there with some Bigwigs acting all DL ish. He calls me over and raves about how his girl, the other had gone on, played the AAA school in town coached by Mrs. Purple. I said that she was an integral part of the game plan. He was so proud I thought he would burst. Well, one of the VIP's asked how we game planned for such an obvious talent that was his daughter. I told him it was simple "Mrs Purple told all the girls to watch out for Little Lovett and whenever she got the ball, let her shoot. That way we could rebound the miss and fast break the other way for an easy two!!!" The VIP's thought it was funny. DL's muskrat rose about 4" off his head! I just said "Thank you , good nite be sure to take care of your great wait staff. I'll be in Tahoe on the 14th"

Back to the Texas game, I was covering that game in Austin. Nic Wright had a big game for the Flames in his hometown and Day did have a decent one as well. Weren't they from Hagee's school in San Antonio? Anyway, there was another Austinite on the roster although he had just quit school. But we won't get into his situation.
