Ritchie is a good coach and a great human being. He took Sweet 16 UNLV to overtime twice this year. He had some horrible luck this year. The Lobos lost three of their last four games in OT and the other by one point.
The problem with Ritchie is he was snuck into the job in the middle of the night. Lobo fans went to bed thinking Rob Evans of Arizona St. was going to be named the head coach, then woke up in the morning to find out Ritchie had been named coach in the middle of the night. UNM started him off on the wrong foot, and it never changed. Many fans never gave him a chance. But I've seen him outcoach good coaches such as Majerus when he was at Utah and Huggins now at K St.
He was just way over his head here. The Lobo job is a unique job because of the intense pressure, but the lack of resources. Other than the Pit (our BB arena that was named by Sporting News as one of the top 20 sporting venues of the century), UNM doesn't have the tradition that we think we have. I think Liberty is a perfect match for his coaching abilities, his spiritual beliefs and his personality.
