Names surface in coach search

By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance

Two candidates for Liberty's vacant men's basketball coaching job will visit campus this week, and LU athletics director Jeff Barber said Monday he hopes to have a new coach in place by the beginning of next week.

He did confirm names of some of the coaches he has talked to about the job.

Barber has contacted former New Mexico coach Ritchie McKay, as well as Auburn assistant John Cooper, South Carolina assistant Rick Duckett, West Virginia assistant Matt Brown, former Seton Hall coach Louis Orr and Washington assistant Cameron Dollar.

Barber sounds very positive in the article:
Barber said he's been happy with the response the Liberty opening has generated.

"Coaches know you can come here and win this league," Barber said.

"And because of that, there are a lot of people who want that situation. People perceive this as a great job. You look at facilities, budgeting, all those issues, and people say 'wow, there's no reason why you can't win.

I agree with CiderJim, as these lines jumped out from the page...

"McKay, 41, was fired in February after five seasons at New Mexico in which he went 82-65 and 8-41 away from Albuquerque's famed Pit. "

WOW. He sounds like a perfect fit.

Barber declined to name the two coaches visiting campus this week because one candidate is an assistant coach on a team that is still playing postseason basketball.
Interesting.

Well, there is only one name on that list who is with a team still playing (which is a bit of a letdown in itself). That would be:

Matt Brown of WVU (They are still alive in the NIT)

No head coaching experience. 10 years under John Beilein at WVU and Richmond and a couple of years as an Administrative assistant to Billy Donovan at Marshall and Florida.

There may or may not be other people who are under consideration. I named off a bunch of names to Barber that I had heard through my sources and he confirmed or denied them. He didn't offer up any names of his own volition, save for Dollar, who I had heard nothing about previously.

We have a few on our radar that are still in the mix -- Brad Stevens, being one.

Let's take up a collection. We need Super to get the scoop and break the story on FF even before Lang does in the N&A.

I remember Cam Dollar from those Bruins teams of the Mid '90s. He wasn't a great player, but he didn't have to be on those teams.

He was Tyus Edney's backup at the point, but started the national championship game and did a great job (in 95 I believe) when Edney was hurt. Coach's son, point guard for a national championship team, and a college head coach at age 22!!

It's called working. It's a novel concept that a lot of college students have never even considered.
