Once again, you are letting logic get in the way of reality. If you thought resistance was strong among the Belt presidents the last time around, think about how they perceive the presssure on them if they have to compete with our resources. No, the Belt is not likely to be an option in this go-round.
With economics being the primary driver for the two leagues out west in this current mess, a school like ours has two factors making us a viable option:
- 1. Strong football program
- 2. National brand without significant financial constraints
I am not suggesting that the Pac would make an invitation to us. But if it did, this could work. The Pac-2 is doing everything they can to make themselves the clear #5 league but on their terms. Wazzu & OSU are desperately trying to make it as economically enriching to them as possible. They are not looking to be on equal footing with their new conference mates. They have given out all of the sweetheart deals that they intend. Should they have included UNLV & AFA in their first expansion? Unequivably the answer is yes. But that ship has sailed and now they are left with the predicament in which they find themselves. They likely will try to sweeten their offers to their targeted AAC assets. Unless it is substantially better, the answer will remain the same. At that point, they likely invite Texas State who I suspect would immediately accept. That would leave more spot to fill.
As for the MWC, they have successfully staved off extinction for now. An acquistion of Texas State would likely lead to an addition of their sister school Sam Houston. That would assure them meeting their league minumum of 8 full members. Unless AFA or UNLV bolt. That'w what many suspect that if Texas State says 'Yes' then the Bobcats will likely be part of a 4-team expansion of Texas State, Sam, UTEP & NM State. That would secure the conference's future until the next round of realignment. However if Texas State turns down the MWC either to remain in the Belt or by accepting offers from the Pac or AAC then it changes the dynamic completely. Then the MWC will have to get creative. That's why you have seen the public daliances with football-affiliate possibilities at Northn Illinois & Toledo.
For the record, it would not surprise me at all if MWC commish Gloria Narvaez has been in contact with Ian. We would only consider any type of arrangement with the Mountain West predicated on very specific circumstances. It would also not surprise me if Ian had clearly expressed to Pac leadership that we were willing to talk if they are serious about putting together a 'Best of the Rest' league. Finances wouldn't stand in our way like other schools. But once again, we'd rather not be on an island.
I honestly don't expect any of these possibilities for Liberty to ultimately come to fruition. But it is most certainly something to watch.
