An NEC team is definitely better than another DII. Hopefully it'll be Central Connecticut State-they beat Georgia-Southern last year...AT Georgia Southern.

Nice to see North Greenville is off the schedule. You don't want to play 3 division 2 programs in a year. 2 is bad enough. Anyone in the NEC would be okay considering the circumstances we are up against. Central Conn, Stony Brook, and Albany have wins against some very established 1AA powers like Delaware, Hofstra, and GA Southern. Things better improve in the future but as far as this year we just have to accept it and hope for better scheduling as our performances improve.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the NEC a 1AA conference?

Just cracked open the media guide and we NEVER played them before.... We are 1-3 against Carson-Newman all-time.... This would have been the first time that we would have played North Greenville....BTW we have never played Albany or Stony Brook....But someway some how I have Stony Brook coasters on my table in the living room...Last piece of knowledge as I am getting into football mode with this post but we have never beaten Presbyterian... 0-3 all time!!!! Class is over

I remember us playing Southern Connecticut State during the Hout years but I'm drawing a blank on the others.

Ehh, maybe not.

Stony Brook and Albany were for 2008 anyways.

Any new news that you boys are allowed to (or willing to) divulge? It'd make for some interesting discussion at the band table

From Chris as promised:
LU will play W&M, Toledo in non-conference football games

By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
March 7, 2007

Though some of the names are different, Liberty's 2007 football schedule bears a striking similarity to the one the Flames played in Danny Rocco's first season.

The Flames will open with home games against two Division II teams before traveling for two key road tests. There's a money game against an FBS school, and a tough in-conference road test.

Liberty athletics director Jeff Barber said putting together this year's schedule was a major task. Many schools Barber talked to already had their non-conference schedules set, and Liberty has an added challenge because it must schedule six non-conference games per season.

"We had lots of holes to fill," Barber said. "We've been working on this for a while. We had to find games. I know schools in this conference that are still looking for games."

Liberty opens against Division II Tusculum (Tenn.) on Sept. 1 before hosting Shippensburg (Pa.) on Sept. 8.

Filling the schedule with two Division II teams was not ideal, but the alternative was opening on the road against a national power like two-time national champion Appalachian State or North Dakota State, which was 10-1 last season.

Rocco wasn't enamored by either option.

"We're still at the point where we need to build some momentum and get off to a good start," Rocco said. "We need to gain some confidence."

Liberty managed to avoid a third Division II game by scheduling St. Francis (Pa.) for Sept. 29. The Red Flash compete in the limited-scholarship Northeast Conference and went 3-8 last season.

LU also was in talks with Division II Carson-Newman and North Greenville, but the dates didn't work out. Glenville State had been previously scheduled as the opener but pulled out.

"Playing two DIIs is not what I want to do in the future, and we're not going to do that in the future if we don't have to," Barber said. "This year, we were forced to do that."

The other non-conference games are previously announced road matchups with William & Mary (Sept. 15), Elon (Sept. 22) and Toledo (Oct. 6).

The Flames open Big South play at Charleston Southern Oct. 20 after a bye week. Presbyterian, which is transitioning from Division II to Division I and will join the Big South full-time in 2008, visits Lynchburg the following week.

LU hosts Coastal Carolina Nov. 3 and VMI on Nov. 10 before finishing the season at Gardner-Webb on Nov. 17.

That schedule really sucks! But I was prepared for it anyway as Jeff Barber explained in the News Advance article that it was a very difficult process as to conference being so small and all the other problems in putting a schedule together. Hopefully some of these problems will be taken care of next year or maybe get into a better conference. I think that I would have scheduled the App State or North Dakota state games instead of the Shippensburg or St Francis but that is his call and I guess we have to deal with it for the time being. Hopefully this will not diminish my enthusiasm for next year in what should be a breakout season.

what are ya drinking medic?? :D anyway, it was rocco's opinion not to schedule the tougher games. if he does not think they are ready then so be it. we just have to shoot for a big south championship and to beat toledo, so we could look somewhat attractive to the committee.

Hey Chris, when you did that story did they tell you anything about which games would be afternoon and which ones would be night games?

Its still a little early to make all those designations. I'm anxious to see which date is locked up for homecoming.

The schedule up top says 7pm at W&M. That sounds like an approved late night to me. They better get some buses to that game.

Chances are, the early season games will be night games, the late ones will be day game, and Coastal will be mid-afternoon on tv.
